By the way: pressing the power button on the right side of the TV just switches off the LED on the front if the device was in standby previously. The power the TV draws from the mains stays exact the same, about W iirc. Maybe the W are only directly after the TV was switched off, but I definitely do not believe the mW standby which Sony states on its website. Another advantage of recording TV with Windows is the possibility of converting the recordings to another, usefully format. Totally useless and complete crap in my opinion. This means, if your TV breaks and you get a replacement, all your former TV recordings are unuseable.

Connect it directly to the TV. Firstly, did you buy a YouView model not a Freeview Play model? If using a CAM, avoid using its parental rating protection, which may not work during recording.

Actually only the big partitions contain the recordings, the smaller ones with MiB contain both a sql-database with data about all the recordings. An external HDD for TV recordings should have an power switch, so that the harddrive does not need to run unnecessarily if it is not used. The filename is the hexadecimal representation of the corresponding index number in the sql-database. I know that they are encrypted, and maybe also compressed… The encryption is most likely bound to the unique mainboard so only the particular TV which was used to record the file can play it again.
