Smoke radar alberta
Smoke from wildfires in forests and grasslands can be a major source of air pollution for Canadians. The fine particles in the smoke can be a serious risk to health, smoke radar alberta, particularly for children, seniors and those with heart or lung disease. Because smoke may be carried thousands of kilometres downwind, distant locations can be affected almost as severely as areas close to the fire. FireWork is an air quality prediction system that indicates how smoke from wildfires is expected to move across North America over smoke radar alberta next 72 hours.

Smoke radar alberta
Wildfires raged in Alberta, Canada, during the last two weeks of May, resulting in thousands of square kilometres of boreal forest being burned and causing a huge amount of smoke to enter the atmosphere. Not only does this smoke affect the health of those living in the vicinity of the fires, it can also be transported long distances by the wind, impacting air quality thousands of kilometres away. It appears that high-intensity wildfires are becoming more common; partly due to climate change increasing the likelihood of extreme weather. Although often sparked by lightning or human activity, hot and dry conditions also increase the risk of fires. In general, wildfires are responsible for a significant amount of atmospheric pollution, producing a lot of soot, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as small amounts of other pollutants. Since mid-May, the Alberta wildfires have been spewing pollution into the air. The service also combines these observations with the ECMWF weather forecast system — which models the transport and chemistry of the pollutants — to predict how the atmospheric composition will be affected up to five days ahead. As these pollutants become distributed around the globe, wildfires in one part of the world can affect air quality in other parts. The annual fire season typically lasts from May to October, with peak activity in July and August. But with such warm and dry conditions, the Alberta fires have become so extensive that CAMS has clearly been able to see the smoke travelling all the way across the Atlantic Ocean over just a couple of days. Data such as these are really helpful for quickly evaluating CAMS products and giving us confidence in our model. Date: 10th June A CAMS forecast of carbon monoxide levels in the atmosphere on 3 June, showing particularly high levels over the North Atlantic between Alberta and Europe, due to emissions from the wildfires.

Ground level concentration of particulate matter 2. The BlueSky Canada smoke forecast is our current best estimate of when and where wildfire smoke events may occur over the next two days. The map may not agree exactly with local smoke concentrations and timing, and should be used with care. For additional information please consult the FAQ. This BlueSky Canada smoke forecast is considered experimental because it is produced by a modeling system that is an ongoing research project and subject to uncertainties in fire data and emissions, weather forecasts, and smoke dispersion.

The system uses satellite detections to locate fires; if cloud cover or smoke obscures the detection of fires from space, the resulting emissions from these fires will not be included in the smoke forecast. NOTE: This forecast does not include smoke from sources that are outside the boundaries of the forecast domain. The BlueSky framework currently does not have a mechanism to transport smoke into the model domain from external sources. Please use the Canada-wide forecast to evaluate whether long-range smoke transport may affect your region.

The air quality is unaffected for most individuals. Air quality sensors provide different accuracy and precision than data from traditional stations. The AQHI value reported by sensors may differ from that of a traditional station by a value of 1, or value of 2 in rare instances. The FireWork system makes it possible to include the effects of wildfire smoke in forecasts of air quality by estimating the amount of pollution that will be added to the air.
