The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim made radical changes to the franchise's leveling and progression systems. Attributes were simplified into one of three categories, skills now have dedicated perk trees, and players now leveled skills up by using them instead of allocating points towards them. It took the community some time to get used to the system, but many agree that Skyrim's changes to leveling were much more intuitive than Oblivion's leveling system. One change Bethesda also made to character progression came in the form of Standing Stones, Skyrim's take on the birthsign system in past games. The Lover Stone is one of the skill advancement boosting shrines, much like the Guardian Stones except that it boosts the advancement of all skills as opposed to just one. Just east of Markath there is a river known as Karth River which looks similar to a backward leaning P. Just Northwest of the northernmost tip of the river where it is still shaped like the letter, as seen on the map, you will find the Lover Stone primary location, where the standing stones themselves can be found. If you have found Kolskegger Mine, you can start from this location and travel west from the bridge crossing the nearby river, also the Karth, looking for the closest path leading up which should be on your right. Traveling north from this location should also allow you to find a steep path to the left that can lead you to the location, although it is a bit harder to find. The Lover Stone is the 4th and only skill advancement boosting shrine not found at the Guardian Stones location in Skyrim. There are a few items you can find of particular value in the surrounding area, one being an Iron Ore Vein located to the west. To find it effectively, stand at the Lady Stone and turn exactly west. The farthest tree you can see, which is still relatively close, and directly under the W of your compass will be the one which marks the Iron Ore Vein. One directly in front of you and the other among the rock patch to the right of the ore vein.

The Standing Stones are magical stones found in the wilderness which can give your character special abilities and powers. There are thirteen Standing Stones in total, each associated with one of Tamriel's thirteen constellations.
