A former Victorian chief magistrate has congratulated the family of a man whose body was found in Ocean Grove after they successfully petitioned the coroner to reopen the investigation into his death. Simon Gaskill, more commonly known as Simo, was the local grom growing up, riding the waves of Skenes Creek from dusk to dawn. On April 15 last year, Simo became known as the body in the dunes after a teenager made a grim discovery. At the time, the year-old had been camping on the beach, taking a break from living in the surrounding caravan parks. The initial investigations quickly declared the death as not suspicious but those closest to Simo began a probe of their own, determined to find answers.

Simon Gaskill always believed he would fly back home someday. He would think of home while streaking across southeast Asia during tours as a pilot in Vietnam. He would think of home during 18 years as a commercial pilot for Eastern Airlines. Well, Gaskill has returned to Hampton after being away more than 40 years, traveling the Western Hemisphere and living the big city life in New York and Atlanta. He remembered a segregated town with clear rules for where he could and could not go. Gaskill, 61, is active in the Wythe-Phenix Improvement Association. He ended up doing two tours as a B pilot and one as an OV pilot. Vietnam molded and defined him.
