The Emmy award-winning show Arcane has had a lot of buzz around it since it came out last year, many prising the shows incredible story line, and ability to portray some of the most compelling examples of trauma and emotional disarray in western animation. At the heart of the show are the plethora of interesting and highly complex characters, from the supposed heroes of the show who constantly dip their toes in acts morally ambiguous in nature, to the relatable villains. None perhaps are more memorable than the season one antagonist Silco - but what makes him the perfect villain? Ever since Silco first appeared in episode one, it was clear that Arcane were doing something special. While perhaps not as meaningful as Ekko's introduction , he appears in the usual nefarious way villains are shown, shrouded in darkness, making for a terrifying introduction. He embodies three of the most crucial elements in animation to create a great character: physical animation, overall design, and voice actor performance. Almost everything he says throughout the show demands attention, forcing everything to listen carefully to him, his words carefully chosen and purposeful, always riddled with subtle threats: in many ways they are his primary weapon.

Silco was a Zaunite drug lord and the adoptive father of Jinx. A tyrannical and brutal man, he sought to free the undercity from Piltover 's control and willing to do just about anything to achieve that goal. Silco and Vander were like brothers during their youth, and the two of them once fought together in order to free Zaun from Piltover's repressive rule. However, due to unknown circumstances, Vander eventually betrayed Silco and attempted to drown him in Zaun's polluted rivers. Although Silco managed to survive the incident, the chemicals in the water heavily scarred his face and mutated his left eye. Although he was left traumatized by Vander's betrayal, Silco believed that he had been reborn as a stronger person. Despite this, he couldn't bring himself to forgive Vander for his actions and began to plot his revenge against his former friend. His injury also never fully healed and as a result, he was forced to periodically inject small amounts of shimmer into his left eye in order to keep his illness from going out of control.

At one point, however, the two had a falling out, after which Vander tried to drown Silco in a river.

Silco then took Vander from his custody and took him to his Shimmer factory. Despite his grudge, however, Silco still has a degree of respect for Vander, as he remembers the fearsome fighter that the latter used to be—and at one point, even offered him the chance to rejoin forces against Piltover. Enraged by this, Silco then tied Vander up and waited for his children to show up, knowing that they would come to save him. Much to his surprise, Powder then jumped into his arms and told him that Vi had left her and was no longer her sister anymore. He also contacted Marcus, one of the enforcers investigating the children's case, and made a deal with him. Unaware that Vi had momentarily abandoned Powder for unintentionally killing their foster siblings, Silco approached Powder and asked her where her sister was. During his rise to power Silco would make sure to take into account Sevika's advices and treat her well, though in the matters of Jinx she would greatly disapprove of his soft approaches towards his adoptive daughter. Silco brought Jinx to Singed, who used shimmer on Jinx in her operation to bring her back to functioning health. She tied him to a dining chair and later returned with Vi. He was also generally seen wearing a red and black Piltovan three-piece suit.
