Finding the dog is simple enough, but the path back to its owner, Clavicus Vile , can be a little confusing if players have yet to explore the area west of Falkreath. The quest can then be started by traveling to Falkreath and waiting for an NPC to approach the Dragonborn and ask them to speak to Lod , Falkreath's Blacksmith. Lod's house can be found across from the Jarl's Longhouse , and Lod himself can often be seen just outside. Speaking with Lod, he will ask the Dragonborn to head west and follow the road away from Falkreath to find a dog.

It may seem like the dog is lost but he might not be, it is a very long trip and he takes a very roundabout route. The arrow on your compass will actually point to the dog. If the dog is actually glitched then go to a place called Haemar's Shame.

The quest can be obtained once the Dragonborn reaches level A guard or Lod himself whether the quest " Some Light Theft " is completed or not will say he has been looking for a dog and spotted one near the entrance of Falkreath. Lod can be persuaded for half payment 25 can be received or the task can be taken. Barbas can be found west of Falkreath along the road beyond the fork where he will approach the Dragonborn. They can return to Lod once Barbas is found, hand in the quest and then return to Barbas where he is waiting. Barbas will also warn the Dragonborn not to make any deals with Clavicus Vile. Barbas will lead the Dragonborn to Haemar's Shame where the Dragonborn and Barbas will fight vampires and their thralls together, depending on current level.
