The young woman who would come to be known only as shard in the years to follow was born in an alternate time line some eighty years into the future.
Shard and her older brother Lucas Bishop were raised in the 21st Century, some eighty years into an alternate future, by their grandmother. In this timeline, the X-Men were betrayed by one of their own and killed, causing a disaster that caused the government to place a stylized 'M' tattoo over the right eyes of all mutants. The X. Bishop and Shard were the two youngest mutants to be promoted to be officers in the X. Some time after taking command of her own squad in the X. Turned into one of them, Shard was forced to kill mutants to sup their energy to survive.

Shard and Bishop were responsible for apprehending criminal mutants. Shard was partially infected on a mission with her brother fighting a group infected with a vampire-like affliction originating from the present day mutant, Emplate. Here he was said to have made a deal in order for the experiment to even happen in the first place, the price being that he would work for him for a specified period of time. The experiment was a success, but Shard, already partially infected with the Emplate affliction, died. Due to the process involved, Bishop considered himself her murderer. Bishop eventually travelled back in time, to the present, in an effort to track down Trevor Fitzroy , one of his time's most-wanted criminals and Shard's ex-lover, where he became stuck in the present day and became a member of the X-Men , his idols.
