The Fire Giant Surtur was native to the extra-dimensional plane of Muspelheim and was the mortal enemy of the Asgardian ruler Odin and his son Thor. Surtur and the Ice Giant Ymir were older, and therefore more powerful immortals than Odin and Thor, who were always hard pressed to defeat them. Surtur was imprisoned for a long time within the depths of the Earth. In ancient times, as Odin intended to unite Aesir and Vanir into a single tribe, no matter the cost, Surtur proposed Vanir leader Freyr help against the Aesir, resulting in a years-long war between the two Gods kinds. He would cross the Bifrost and destroy Asgard with the Twilight Sword. He was once freed by Loki and set against the Earth when Odin visited it to break the romance between Thor and Jane Foster. Thor used Odin's magic sword to send Surtur to outer space, where he was bound against a magnetic asteroid. Doctor Strange transported Ymir to the South Pole right in front of Surtur just as both were about to strike, their blows canceled each other out, causing both monsters to vanish in a massive explosion. Surtur freed himself again and arrived through the mystical flame in Asgard. The Fire Giant then decided that he would destroy Asgard first, then Earth then the entire universe, marking his arrival by setting the very sky ablaze. Surtur announced his impending arrival and began to shower Asgard with flames. Surtur then crossed Bifrost and attempted to destroy the city once and for all. However, Odin, Thor and Loki made a last stand and eventually defeated Surtur - at the cost of Odin, who fell with his foe into a dimensional rift.
Old Norse religion and mythology. The source of my power!
Surtr is attested in the Poetic Edda , compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda , written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. Surtr has been the subject of place names and artistic depictions, and scholars have proposed theories regarding elements of Surtr's descriptions and his potential origins. No further detail is given about the fight between Surtr and Freyr in the poem. Third adds that Surtr has a flaming sword, and that "at the end of the world he will go and wage war and defeat all the gods and burn the whole world with fire". High says that "amid this turmoil the sky will open and from it will ride the sons of Muspell. Surtr will ride in front, and both before and behind him there will be burning fire. His sword will be very fine.
Thor: Ragnarok opens with Thor being held captive by Surtur, who he quickly defeats — but later on in the movie, Thor needed Surtur to best his sister, Hela. In over 10 years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has explored many places not only on Earth but in other planets and realms. One of the heroes who has taken viewers to other parts of the universe is Thor, who has explored some of the Nine Realms as well as different planets in his solo movies prior to Thor: Love and Thunder. In his third solo adventure, Thor: Ragnarok , the God of Thunder visited new planets and realms and came across never-before-seen threats. Odin had banished Hela from Asgard thousands of years prior to the events of the MCU, imprisoning her in Hel after she rebelled against him, massacring many Asgardians in the process. Hela was no easy opponent, but before she was set free which happened once Odin passed away , Thor had to defeat a seemingly bigger threat — Surtur. Surtur himself explains this at the beginning of Thor: Ragnarok , saying he was far weaker without the Eternal Flame, which he needed to restore his full power. Surtur did look quite weak, and he struggled to get up and approach Thor with a sword. Hela is one of the most powerful beings in the MCU and could have gone toe-to-toe with the likes of a pre-Infinity-Stones Thanos and come out the other side victorious. The only reason Hela wasn't an existential threat to the entire multiverse was her Asgard fixation.
