On April 14th, , a well defined seabreeze boundary developed during the early afternoon hours and moved inland across Brunswick and New Hanover counties. Seabreezes form when the land warms during the day, but the ocean water remains cool. When the difference in temperature between the land and the water reaches a critical threshold, the cooler air over the water surges inland like a miniature cold front. Often during the summer months, this seabreeze boundary is the focus for afternoon showers and thunderstorms. When there is a strong offshore west or northwest wind blowing, the seabreeze will not be able to move inland. On radar, the boundary will appear along the coast but remain stationary throughout the day.

Aside from the rising temperature the most obvious change is the wind: the persistent south-westerly regime of winter is relenting and in its place is the coastal seabreeze - warmer, gentler, more localised. Outside of the tropics, seabreezes characterise the Australian coast during the warmer months. Seabreezes, as their name implies, only affect the coastal margins of the continent. Rarely will they travel more than kms inland, although Canberra, kms from the coast and metres elevation, will feel the occasional sea breeze during summer. The genesis of the seabreeze is a temperature difference between coastal land and the adjacent ocean. In spring and summer, the sun heats the land during the morning while the ocean remains the same temperature.
