The Wellens Center provides housing and care for approximately 50 dogs and 80 cats in cage-free adoption spaces featuring glass enclosures designed to more closely replicate a home environment. One of the first animal shelters in the Midwest to become LEED-certified, sophisticated air handling systems provide fresh air heating and cooling to reduce energy use while minimizing the potential for disease transmission. The floor plan arranges animal and visitor circulation paths to manage staging of animal adoption and surrender, to reduce contact between animals where appropriate for disease and stress control, and to provide an accessible, yet separate surgical suite for veterinary care. The building aesthetic reflects the unique culture of the Humane Society and the semi-rural character of the area.
