SASUKE was at first an event in Kinniku Banzuke , a show that had previously required a specific skill in their obstacle courses for instance, the ability to ride a unicycle. The format has remained the same since its inception, but with each Kanzenseiha completion of the entire course , the course is drastically changed, and as a result fewer people pass each stage. Each competition pits competitors against a four-stage obstacle course. Each stage increases in difficulty and a competitor must complete a stage to advance. Competitions begin in the morning and are usually finished well past sunset.

The show was renamed Sasuke Rising before reverting to the original name and then Sasuke Ninja Warrior. The show's name Sasuke is named after Sarutobi Sasuke , a fictitious ninja character in Japanese traditional storytelling. There have been 40 specials produced, approximately one new special per year twice per year before Monster9's bankruptcy, now reduced to once per year since , twice again in and , then once a year since. Until the 10th competition, Sasuke was broadcast as a special part of Muscle Ranking , but it became an independent program when Muscle Ranking was discontinued. The first competition was held indoors, marking the only time Sasuke did not take place outside.
