Samuel Peploe, born in Edinburgh in , is regarded as an important representative of the Scottish colorists who are attributed to Late Impressionism. Peploe's colour palette is light and powerful. His subjects include landscapes, places, portraits and still lifes. In terms of composition and technical skill, this is the work of an artist who first completed his academic training at the Edinburgh Art Academy and was then taught at the private academy Julian in Montmartre. A stay in Holland in became a milestone in his career. A trip to France from onwards was also groundbreaking. Light conditions in nature and the motif captured on the canvas with simple brushstrokes became Peploe's trademark. The "Still Life" with fruit bowl and white jug also shows how the painter was able to capture the light of southern France and the atmosphere of a hot summer day with few means. From to Peploe lived in Paris, concentrating on landscape paintings and still lifes. Even after he returned to Scotland, Peploe continued to focus on clear lines, bright colors and attention to detail. My account. Register account. Peploe is one of the group of four artists known as the 'Scottish Colourists'. Born in Edinburgh, he studied art in Paris and lived there from to It was through painting holidays in Northern France that he was introduced to the use of bold colour, inspired by the bright sunlight. He later experienced the same intensity of light while painting on the island of Iona, off the west coast of Scotland. French painting proved to be a powerful influence for Peploe throughout his life. Although his work never became abstract, it was characterised by tight composition, strong colour and assured handling.

Inspired by the bright sunlight, he experimented with the bold use of colour, and the influence of the rustic realism of French painters is evident in his landscapes. In Peploe married Margaret MacKay — , whom he had known since He also moved to Paris in , a period which saw him concentrate increasingly on still life and landscape painting. His still-life works show the influence of Manet , with combinations of fluid brushwork, thick impasto and dark backgrounds with strong lighting. Returning to Scotland in he found that his usual dealer refused his work and he was obliged to stage his own exhibition. Peploe went on regular painting trips with friends to many parts of the country, and during the s he spent several summers with Francis Cadell, another Scottish Colourist, painting in Iona.

Samuel John Peploe died on the 11 th October after an illness which had lasted some considerable time, followed by an operation from which, most regrettably, he never rallied.
