Most Logia-type Devil Fruits in Eiichiro Oda's One Piece confer powers that are a cut above the other two categories in their basest form. On ingesting these fruits the user receives a broad range of abilities covering long range attacks, environmental manipulation, and most importantly, the power of intangibility. At the start of the series, this proved to be a major problem for Luffy and the Straw Hats, where they had to devise specific countermeasures against the fruit in each case. It was only the introduction of Haki that evened the playing field between Logia users and the general populace, and still leaves a considerable gap in power that would remain difficult to address. One of the most iconic and sought after fruits in this class however, is the Mera Mera no Mi, which was most recently eaten by Sabo, Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Army and Luffy's sworn brother. Prior to the events of the Dressrosa Arc, where Sabo came to possess the fruit, it was made famous by the son of the Pirate King, Portgas D. Ace's exploits with the fruit earned him the epithet of "Fire Fist," which was also his signature attack when using the power of the Mera Mera no Mi.

In a world where Wanted posters are still the most common way to look for a criminal, verbal descriptions would be extremely important, and so managing your reputation is both easier and more difficult. Having a Devil Fruit, therefore, is a conclusive way to prove someone is who you think they are. What Fruits would be worth the advantage? In the world of One Piece , anyone who eats a Devil Fruit is granted unique powers that they later hone to perfection and use to suit their needs, whether it's for defense, offense or any other use. There are three types of Devil Fruits, among which Logia is believed to be the strongest type. This Devil Fruit has the ability to transform the user's body into flames, making them invulnerable to all physical attacks except those imbued with Haki. It is also one of the few known Devil Fruits to have more than one user. It contributes significantly to Ace being one of the most feared pirates in the world. Because this Devil Fruit is so incredibly strong, Ace rarely had to rely on his Haki. After his tragic death, his sworn brother Sabo takes the powers of Mera Mera no Mi himself, further inheriting his will as well. Also known as the "Flame-Flame Fruit," this Devil Fruit allows the user to create, control and transform into fire at will. The fruit has a round, orange-colored appearance, with many flame-shaped components having swirl patterns. Even the stem on the top of the Devil Fruit is swirled.

Doflamingo intended to use it as a means to erode the foundation of Luffy's alliance with Trafalgar Law , where he knew that the Straw Hat captain would charge in with no second thought in order to prevent Ace's Devil Fruit from falling into the wrong hands. It is said that Ace had sunk countless battleships and defeated hordes of extremely strong pirates with his flame powers, and this attack in particular. Enraged by this knowledge, Luffy vowed to enter the tournament and win it, even though he would not have been able to eat the fruit and take its power for himself. Sabo obtained and then ate the Mera Mera no Mi, and the first attack he used with his new abilities was Ace's signature move, Hiken.
