The Ryerson Index is an online index of death notices from Australian newspapers, past and present, compiled by the Sydney-based non-profit organisation Ryerson Index Incorporated. Currently, the Index is used by both genealogists and non-genealogists all over Australia and countries worldwide. It has just celebrated its 25th anniversary as a website, with three of the founding members President John Graham, Secretary Pauline Kettle and Committee Member Peter Kettle still heavily involved. This valuable genealogical resource is named after Joyce Ryerson, who inadvertently created it when she started compiling death, funeral and obituary notices from the Sydney Morning Herald on a daily basis. Her aim was to develop a register of former pupils of her old school. After 14 consecutive years she mentioned the content of her stored treasures to a fellow member of the Dead Persons Society, and there was jubilation! The newspaper death notices were converted into indexed data, and more newspapers were added to the project, a goldmine to web savvy family historians around the world for generations to come. Joyce Ryerson became an instant internet celebrity, and she kept contributing to her index until her death in at the age of She is now listed in the Ryerson Index. The Ryerson Index is a free index to death notices that appear in Australian newspapers, edited by volunteers around Australia. The earliest paper included is the Sydney Gazette, from , and the index covers right up until the present. The index includes funeral notices, some probates notices and obituaries. It is only an index, however, so you then have to access the full detailed record from another source. Digital newspapers are identified by the standard name unique to each publisher, News Corp papers are identified as 'News Corp Digital Notices'.
