Anyone who does anything with calculus should probably read it. That said, it isn't a perfect primer. The proofs can be difficult to follow, and the language is very high-level. Some chapters suffer from a lack of examples or explanation. To get the most out of this book, it really has to be a classroom companion; you're not going to get too much out of just reading it in your spare time.

The text begins with a discussion of the real number system as a complete ordered field. Dedekind's construction is now treated in an appendix to Chapter I. The topological background needed for the development of convergence, continuity, differentiation and integration is provided in Chapter 2. There is a new section on the gamma function, and many new and interesting exercises are included. Need support? We're here to help - Get real-world support and resources every step of the way.
Speaking now in math jargon, Baby Rudin is isomorphic to a dictionary. This becomes an important computational tool in the later chapters. This question is not a simple as it may seem, and the additional property of equicontinuity is developed extending the idea of uniform continuity to all functions in family.
Initially published by McGraw Hill in , it is one of the most famous mathematics textbooks ever written. Moore instructor , Rudin taught the real analysis course at MIT in the — academic year. Martin , who served as a consulting editor for McGraw Hill , that there were no textbooks covering the course material in a satisfactory manner, Martin suggested Rudin write one himself. After completing an outline and a sample chapter, he received a contract from McGraw Hill. He completed the manuscript in the spring of , and it was published the year after.

My argument, then, is that this book is a classic, but it needs to come with a warning: For Mathematically Mature Audiences Only. There is also a set of wonderful, tough exercises. Chapter eight covers special functions such as the exponential, logarithm, gamma function and elementary Fourier series. Dedekind's construction is now treated in an appendix to Chapter I. Chapter 4 discusses continuous functions in metric spaces, the relation between connectedness and continuity in metric spaces, compactness in such spaces, discontinuities, infinite limits and uniform continuity. Rudin includes a short summary of Fourier series and includes a short proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. In this edition, Rudin relegates the construction to an appendix, arguing that this construction is too difficult for beginning students. Baby Rudin is a frustrating book due to its brevity. Anyone who does anything with calculus should probably read it. That said, it isn't a perfect primer.
The author's recommendation that the text may be used for first-year mathematics lecture courses is now, as it must have also been in the s and s, somewhat unrealistic. Join the discussion. In this way it reminded me of Gallagher's stochastic processes book. So informative it almost killed me. Anyone who does anything with calculus should probably read it. For multivariate analysis, I would strongly recommend Munkres' Analysis on Manifolds. Over the course of his career he tinkered with and perfected it, and it has achieved classic status in its third and final edition in the McGraw-Hill international series in pure and applied mathematics, the entries of which are outrageously expensive, by the way. As the purchaser and consumer of this text, you don't really have a choice. But there is far more explanation, examples and details and those are chosen with the greatest of care so the student is not spoon-fed. Baby Rudin elegantly presents, proves, and discusses all its material and, without waxing poetic, it shows you how beautiful math can be. As I might have mentioned long ago, all of the books that I read are only for my own amusement. This discussion leads to the Arzela-Ascoli theorem theorem 7. Customer Service Guaranteed.
