Rosalind Elsie Franklin 25 July — 16 April [1] was a British chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose work was central to the understanding of the molecular structures of DNA deoxyribonucleic acid , RNA ribonucleic acid , viruses , coal, and graphite. Franklin graduated in with a degree in natural sciences from Newnham College, Cambridge , and then enrolled for a PhD in physical chemistry under Ronald George Wreyford Norrish , the Chair of Physical Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. The research on coal helped Franklin earn a PhD from Cambridge in After joining King's College London in as a research associate, Franklin discovered some key properties of DNA, which eventually facilitated the correct description of the double helix structure of DNA. In April , Matthew Cobb and Nathaniel Comfort suggested new evidence in an opinion piece that Franklin was a contributor and "equal player" in process leading to the discovery of the molecular structure of DNA, rather than otherwise, as may have been presented subsequently after the time of the discovery. Working under John Desmond Bernal , Franklin led pioneering work at Birkbeck on the molecular structures of viruses. Franklin's father, Ellis Arthur Franklin — , was a politically liberal London merchant banker who taught at the city's Working Men's College , and her mother was Muriel Frances Waley — Rosalind was the elder daughter and the second child in the family of five children. David — was the eldest brother while Colin — , Roland — , and Jenifer born were her younger siblings. Franklin's paternal great-uncle was Herbert Samuel later Viscount Samuel , who was the Home Secretary in and the first practising Jew to serve in the British Cabinet. Rosalind's middle name, "Elsie", was in memory of Hugh's first wife, who died in the flu pandemic. Franklin's parents helped settle Jewish refugees from Europe who had escaped the Nazis , particularly those from the Kindertransport. From early childhood, Franklin showed exceptional scholastic abilities. At that time, her aunt Mamie Helen Bentwich , described her to her husband: "Rosalind is alarmingly clever — she spends all her time doing arithmetic for pleasure, and invariably gets her sums right. Franklin was 11 when she went to St Paul's Girls' School in Hammersmith , west London, one of the few girls' schools in London that taught physics and chemistry.

As a community-based medical school, we offer our students hands-on experience in a variety of clinical environments in an interprofessional educational setting. At Chicago Medical School, we teach that patients are the center of the model of care, as well as an active and important member of the healthcare team. Our students learn that outcomes improve through positive patient interactions and clear communication. They sharpen their skills with patient interactions during their didactic training in our simulation labs in a supportive environment with attentive faculty. Additionally, students get early exposure to actual patients in a range of clinical environments early on, including inner-city hospitals that help the underserved, the Federal Health Care Center that provides medical care to U. From day one, Chicago Medical School students learn and collaborate with their academic peers from our six other colleges. In this interprofessional setting , our students come to understand not only how different care providers and specialties intersect to form a more complete view of patient health, but also how to work on dynamic, patient-centered health teams. Chicago Medical School believes in fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone can feel free to share their experiences and ideas. We also recognize the need to drive more equitable health outcomes and provide more and better assistance to historically underserved populations.

Even while undergoing cancer treatment, Franklin continued to work, and her group continued to produce results — seven papers in and six more in Universities Press. Tait, Sylvia A. British Crystallographic Association 62 : 16— Franklin topped her classes, and won annual awards. Drawing upon her physical chemistry background, a critical innovation Franklin applied was making the camera chamber that could be controlled for its humidity using different saturated salt solutions.
