I like basements. I particularly like basements with activities that you would never expect to find there. Bocce ball. And on this particular day the activity? Part of what I liked about it was the lack of the present. The lanes are worn from so many years of use. Pins and bowling balls occasionally get stuck in the back. The fact that there are still ashtrays in the scoring tables was particularly fascinating. I sat there trying to imagine what it was like in there 60 years ago when there were people probably smoking at every single lane. And then I breathed very deeply, thanking my lucky stars that maybe there are some things about it that are in the present.
