The Ciaphas Cain series is a collection of science fiction novels set in the Warhammer 40, universe. They center on the eponymous character, an Imperial Commissar of the Imperial Guard , and his varied and colorful career. Cain is the main character of Sandy Mitchell 's novels published by the Black Library. The Cain series currently stands at nine titles:. The novels are presented as Cain's personal and often rambling notes. After his death, a third party edited them into a more coherent form, interspersed them with footnotes or snippets of other accounts where Cain's first-person and self-centered perspective does not provide sufficient context, and made them available for use by the Holy Inquisition. This editor is revealed over the course of the first account to be Inquisitor Amberley Vail of the Ordo Xenos, Cain's long-time collaborator and herself a prominent figure in the accounts.

Here is a list of characters and character tropes appearing in the Cain Archive , broken down into folders for ease of use. Note that the article contains unmarked spoilers. Even the name of one of the folders is a notable spoiler for one of the books. Ciaphas Cain is a man of questionable origin — he is commonly believed to be a Hiveworlder, yet no one knows where exactly his birthplace is, maybe not even himself — tall, imposing stature, handsome, charming, and a pathological liar. He was enrolled in the Schola Progenium, where he acquired his commissarial sash despite middling-low performance in academics, excelling only in sports, combat training and discipline note A word which here means "not getting caught". Shortly thereafter he was assigned to the Valhallan 12th Field Artillery unit, the beginning of a positively ludicrous series of heroic exploits. There's no doubt that his actions on the battlefield were decisive, and they usually directly led to glorious victories of various degrees. However, the reasoning behind them is in the eye of the beholder. According to those he had risked his life to save, he's Cain the Liberator, Cain the Hero, slayer of daemons and leader of men whose biographies verge on canonization. In fact, one obscure Tallarn cult views him as a living embodiment of the God-Emperor's will. According to his own secret memoirs, he is a poor, pathetic coward concerned solely with his well-being and escaping responsibility, his every heroic, selfless, or even considerate action taken solely to manipulate others into aiding him. Accidental Hero : Lots and lots of times. He invariably tries to put himself out of harm's way only to inadvertently wind up in an even bigger mess than the one he was trying to avoid, and ends up having to solve the plot to save his own neck.
Cain's disgust for what he calls "Emperor-botherers" might be the closest thing to an atheist he can be in a theocratic empire. You must be logged in to post a comment. Cursed with Awesome : She causes rakel 40k through her clumsiness every time she's mentioned, rakel 40k.
Amberley Vail is an Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos , best known for her close professional and personal association with the famous commissar Ciaphas Cain. Vail does not profess allegiance to any particular Inquisitorial faction, but her actions are generally those of a Puritan. She prefers safe disposal of xenos or Chaos artefacts in most cases with few exceptions, and she considers Radicals of any ordo to be barely distinguishable from their heretical prey. Physically, Amberley Vail is tall, blonde, and blue-eyed, and has the powerful contralto voice of a trained singer. Vail operated mostly in the Damocles Gulf and the surrounding space of the Segmentum Ultima. Her length of service is currently unknown, but spans for at least a standard century.
Ferik Jurgen was a gunner first class of the Astra Militarum 's Valhallan Ice Warriors regiments who served for many solar decades as Commissar Ciaphas Cain 's adjutant. He was first assigned as Cain's adjutant after Cain graduated from the Schola Progenium and was given his first assignment to serve with the 12th Valhallan Field Artillery on the world of Desolatia IV. Despite his less than savoury appearance, a general lack of basic interpersonal skills, and a case of body odour that could overwhelm a Carnifex , Jurgen proved indispensable to Cain in the course of his career. Jurgen was truly defined by his fierce bravery, an unwavering sense of loyalty to his patron no matter the odds, his ability to withstand any situation save for flying without complaint, and the fact that he was a rare psychic Blank , possessed of the anti- psyker Pariah Gene. This last ability saved Cain and many of his allies and others under his command from Daemonic and psychic attacks at many of the most desperate times in the famed commissar's career. Remarkably, but not surprisingly, in all of the accounts of Cain's heroism recounted publicly as Imperial propaganda, Jurgen is not mentioned at all, though his actions are recorded in the more truthful autobiographical accounts of the events that marked his career that Ciaphas Cain himself authored and that were edited by the Inquisitor Amberley Vail. It would be no exaggeration to say that Jurgen was with Ciaphas Cain almost from the very start of his long career. After Cain graduated from the Schola Progenium and received his first assignment to the Valhallan 12th Field Artillery, Jurgen was the soldier assigned by the battery's commander, Colonel Mostrue, to greet Cain as he stepped off the transport on the world of Desolatia IV. Given Jurgen's disheveled appearance, vague manner, and a body odour "which preceded him like a personal force bubble," Cain understood well that Mostrue was expressing his low opinion of the Commissariat in general, and Cain in particular. The two men saw little of each other in the following weeks, until Desolatia IV was attacked by a splinter of Hive Fleet Behemoth.

A Primaris Psyker of the Astra Militarum. A psyker is an individual of any intelligent species in the Warhammer 40, universe who possesses some degree of psychic ability or powers. Psychic powers are sometimes referred to as " sorcery " when they are gained or enhanced through interaction and bargaining with the malevolent entities who exist within the Empyrean. Psykers are also sometimes called " witches " in the Imperium of Man and among the Aeldari , particularly when such powers are used in a way that they show no regard for the dangers they may spawn for others or are used in pursuit of the agenda of the Chaos Gods. Psychic powers are sometimes referred to by the ignorant in the Imperium as " magic ", also spelled " magick. All psykers draw their powers from the extradimensional realm of psychic energy known as the Immaterium or the " Warp " that underlies and penetrates four-dimensional realspace and is the source of all psychic energy in the universe. As such, psykers, particularly Human psykers whose minds are far less disciplined and easily tempted than their Aeldari counterparts, are often in danger of possession by the Daemonic entities of the Warp, the onset of insanity and ultimate corruption by the Ruinous Powers of Chaos. Most of the intelligent species in the Warhammer 40, galaxy employ psykers on the battlefield; some of these psykers are inevitably more potent than others.

However, the reasoning behind them is in the eye of the beholder. Sword and Gun : Laspistol in one hand, chainsword in the other — see the section picture. Accidental Murder : Killed another trooper by crushing their larynx; she claims it was only meant to be an incapacitating blow. If he found it, he could manufacture psykers by the billions, all unprotected by the Emperor's sanction. Drink-Based Characterization : Just about any time Cain mentions drinking something, it's credits to carrots that it's either alcoholic amasec or non-alcoholic tanna tea or recaff if there is no tanna around. He actually performed all of the heroic deeds he's known for, whether he wanted to do something so dangerous or not. Kasteen, whom Cain helped mold as an officer, notes that the Valhallans are inflicting far more casualties than the commissar's own Nusquan 1st Regiment while taking far fewer. Cain considers himself to be one, In-Universe. Though partners in the hunt, Vail and Lazarus both hoped to claim the prestige of finding the Renegades and reclaiming the Shadowlight. The ancient xenos relic was returned to Perlia, where it remained until the turn of the millennium. Generation Xerox : Comes up once he's a Cool Teacher , in the form of Donal who's just too much like Cain himself at that age.

Jenit Sulla A former quartermaster officer of Valhallan all-female regiment, she initially hated the merging between th and st regiments and, by proxy Ciaphas Cain himself, but grew up to respect the new traditions and genuinely admire Cain, seeing him as somewhat a mentor figure. It is perhaps telling, however, that there are numerous occasions where Cain could have sacrificed his Guardsmen's lives to keep himself out of harm's way but chose not to. The Perils of Being the Best : Cain, Kasteen and Broklaw note the irony that Lustig would be content to be a Sergeant Rock for the entirety of his career, and will probably have to be ordered to accept the officer's commission he is so manifestly fit for. When given the chance to butcher heretics on Adumbria, she reacts like a kid in a candy store. Having known him personally, I tend to the view that the truth is a little more complicated than either postulation. Even while the regiment was still fighting to hold the refinery, Cain's record search revealed that the refinery was not sited on the planet's richest promethium deposits, but on a lesser deposit that was sited directly over the stasis tomb. Cowardly Lion : Cain is a guy with little courage that nonetheless achieves feats of great daring do. Berserk Button : Don't threaten Janny when he's around. Ciaphas Cain. Perpetual Smiler : His only notable trait is that he's always bright and cheerful, regardless of the circumstances. Current Wiki. First-Person Smartass : Even when he's "in-character", he's prone to making a few offhand wisecracks. Cain's own Self-Deprecation gets in the way of him realizing his own importance in a situation. As the th had been a rear-echelon regiment for most of its history, the newly-promoted Colonel Kasteen felt an immense need to prove herself to the more experienced veterans of the st, particularly her newfound subordinate Major Broklaw particularly as she got the colonelcy by virtue of three days seniority.
