Adding a rainbow to your images can be done in many different ways. However, not every technique is easily put into practice or can offer a remarkably consistent result. For example, the prism method is very efficient to get the effect on your files straight out of camera, but it can make focusing and composition a bit difficult. In this tutorial, Jessica Kobeissi will show you a couple of simple techniques using only Photoshop. In the video above, Kobeissi demonstrates how she adds a rainbow light effect, similar to what you could get by shooting through a prism or making light shine through a piece of crystal. She will show you multiple ways to achieve your desired result, either with pictures of a rainbow you took, by drawing it yourself, or by adding a gradient map on top of your image. So be sure to watch the full video to learn all about both the techniques and blending modes that work best together.

A while back, a photographer friend of mine made a really neat DIY rainbow light filter using diffraction glasses, and I wanted to give it a try myself so that I could show you how. Let me tell you, making this little rainbow filter and shooting with it have been so much fun, so I encourage you to try it if you are looking for something new! The diffraction glasses that I ordered are cheap and flimsy, which is exactly what you want! You want to be able to cut them apart to fit them onto your lens filter. The nicer ones with actual lenses and sturdy frames aren't as easily applied to your lens filter. So, order the 5 pack so that you can use a pair for lens filter purposes, and give the rest to the kids - everyone wins! In this case, I used a warming filter that I haven't used in ages.

To do that, I'll position my mouse almost at the edge of the photo near the bottom right corner, in line horizontally with the bottom of the trees on the left. Since the gradient was drawn on the layer mask, not on the layer itself, we don't see the actual gradient in the image. You'll find the Opacity option directly across from the blend mode option at the top of the Layers panel. I want my rainbow to appear as if it's touching the ground behind the group of trees on the left of my photo and then arching high above the larger tree on the right. To make the rainbow gradient appear as an arc when we draw it, go back up to the Options Bar at the top of the screen and click on the Radial Gradient option:.
