His reign became, along with the witch hunts , one of the defining factors of the post- war period that followed the Peace of Cintra. Radovid was a polarizing figure: a brilliant strategist and a superb general to some, a paranoid madman to others. There were also many who took the middle view of his policies being harsh but justified. His two older sisters were Dalimira and Milena. Even though his father was assassinated in , Prince Radovid didn't succeed him immediately because he was only twelve at the time and for several years the kingdom was governed by a Regency Council , under the influence of Duke Nitert and Count Sigismund Dijkstra , the then- spymaster of the Redanian Secret Service. Radovid bore a deep aversion towards mages that stemmed from his father being secretly assassinated by an unknown elf at the behest of the sorceress advisor Philippa Eilhart , [N 3] who then pulled strings from behind his back, ruled in his name and dominated and demeaned him throughout his youth. He grew up with two older sisters: Dalimira, informally known as Dalka, and Milena, who was known as Milka in a similar fashion. Dalka eventually dedicated her life to the priesthood after her failed engagement with King Foltest of Temeria , who instead chose to marry his own sister Adda , while Milka attended Aretuza to become a sorceress Millegarda. When Prince Radovid was 9 years old he was formally engaged to Cirilla , Princess of Cintra , when she was The engagement was formalized between his father and Queen Calanthe , Ciri's grandmother, but the king broke the engagement off after half a year without giving any explanation and Ciri and Radovid never even had a chance to talk to each other. On the day of the outbreak of the Second Northern War with the Nilfgaardian Empire , his father had unexpectedly fallen victim to an elven assassin. Redania fell into chaos, as usually happens in such circumstances, and Queen Hedwig was not in a state to control things. Several practically licked the boots of Nilfgaardian emissaries led by Shilard Fitz-Oesterlen and were ready to rule with Nilfgaardian blessing, only to be caught off guard and stopped by the famous Redanian Secret Service. There remained but a handful of those who were spared, those with important enough social status and armed might to maintain peace, like Duke Nitert. Nitert was put in charge of the Regency Council appointed to save the realm from a total civil war and they managed to do so, by hanging everyone they deemed traitor in specially modified fortifications with internment camps - most infamous of which would be Drakenborg.

While Geralt, Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Ciri did their best to stay together and safe as half the Continent looks for Ciri , the kingdom of Redania went through some truly shocking moments. The Witcher season 4 will see Radovid ruling Redania with Dijkstra and Philippa standing very close to him, and this will have major repercussions in the world of The Witcher. Prince Radovid of Redania made his debut in the Netflix series in season 3, when he was appointed by his brother, King Vizimir, as his new right hand in their quest to find Ciri. However, this led to King Vizimir not informing Dijkstra of every one of his moves, including a meeting with Nilfgaard in which he ended up making a terrible deal with them, which Dijkstra obviously knew was a bad idea that would negatively affect Redania. Radovid ended up being manipulated by both Dijkstra and Philippa, leading him to use and betray Jaskier to their advantage, though he truly had feelings for the bard. Those familiar with The Witcher books and video games know a very different Radovid from the one the Netflix series introduced. Redania, like many others, is still looking for Ciri, and though Radovid is aware of how far Geralt is willing to go to keep Ciri safe and bring her home, he will most likely be manipulated by Philippa into having a much more aggressive approach so they can finally capture the Princess of Cintra.

The Redanian Prince Radovid is a far more complicated case. After all, the game's take on Radovid is a far less hirsute, but infinitely more cunning character — who, as it happens, is a king in his own right. Ruling as Radovid V the Stern, the game version is a harsh and fearsome ruler who's dangerous, intelligent, and heavily implied to be dealing with severe mental health issues. What's more, his relationship with King Vizimir is very different than it seems to be in the Netflix show. The show's Radovid seems to be younger than King Radovid is in "The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings," and he's definitely far more regal-looking than the bald-headed, eternally frowning video game version. This is actually a bit ironic, seeing as the Netflix Radovid has been aged up considerably, and is well below the game version in the royal pecking order. In the game, you see, Radovid is Vizimir's son. However, the show has eschewed the generational aspect of the pair's familial relationship and turned Radovid into the Redanian king's brother instead. Because of this, what we're seeing here seems to be an early version of Radovid who's yet to descend into his paranoid schemes, and unless he's been reimagined beyond the point of recognition, there's a reason to suspect that the good prince has a pretty big and worrying arc ahead of him.
