Abstract Objectives: Suicide attempts from public places, including bridges, often result in emergency responders being called to these events.

The following is a list of current and historic sites frequently chosen to attempt suicide , usually by jumping. Some of the sites listed have installed suicide barriers , signs advising potential suicides to take other actions, and other precautions, such as crisis hotline phones. Exact numbers of victims are sometimes difficult to determine, as many jurisdictions and media agencies have ceased collecting statistics and reporting suicides at common sites, in the belief that the reporting may encourage others. Unlike its more famous namesake in Venice, Italy, the Peruvian Puente de los Suspiros was of simple construction and not exactly glamorous. When it was destroyed, along with much of Barranco, during the War of the Pacific in , it was presumably more of an inconvenience rather than a terrible architectural loss. It was rebuilt two years later. In the mids, the stream that ran below the bridge was converted into a stone pathway leading from the Puente de los Suspiros to the beaches at the foot of the coastal cliffs.
