Preseason week 1 scores
The NFL is back, sort of. Last week's Hall of Fame Game unofficially kicked off the preseason, and many casual fans won't consider exhibition action "real" football anyway.
T he first full weekend of NFL preseason games is done and dusted. There as plenty of action to talk about, with rookie quarterbacks Bryce Young and Anthony Richardson making debuts. However the two, along with C. Stroud , experienced some growing pains. The second year quarterback out of Pittsburgh had no problems leading the Steelers offence to the end zone in what was his only drive of the game. The former first round pick looked good in his limited action, finishing with seven completions and a touchdown.

Flores is looking to bring a newfound energy to a Vikings defense that ranked 31st overall and 28th in points allowed last season. That's probably still Minnesota's plan, especially given his experience with the Vikings' schemes and personnel.

Breer also noted that Young's neck condition impacted his trade market during the season before he was traded from the Washington Commanders to the San Francisco 49ers. The year-old has been limited by injuries throughout his NFL career, but the neck ailment was noticed after he suffered a stinger during a preseason game with the Commanders ahead of the campaign. The stinger resulted in Young missing Washington's Week 1 matchup with a neck injury, though he returned for Week 2 and still appeared in 16 games. Young was traded from the Commanders to 49ers after Washington's Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He became a free agent after the season after having his fifth-year option declined by the Commanders. Young finished the season having posted 7.

While the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers opened the NFL preseason with their Hall of Fame game matchup last week, preseason kicked off in earnest this week, as all 32 teams were in action. Saturday was the big day with 10 games. Bridgewater, the Vikings' first-round pick in , played for Minnesota from to '17 and is competing with Drew Lock to be the Broncos' starter. It didn't matter that the Colts had only two starters -- one on offense and one on defense -- playing in their preseason opener against Carolina. All eyes centered around the quarterback battle between Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger to be the starter if injured Carson Wentz is not ready to open the season. There's no clear favorite after Sunday. Eason closed out his playing time by leading the Colts to a touchdown late in the first half, and Ehlinger used a combination of his arm and legs to lead them to the victory. The highlight of Eason's afternoon came on his final series when he ran the two-minute offense at the end of the first half.

The Seahawks quarterback and former East Carolina star was nearly flawless in limited late-game action. When the Vikings parted ways with star running back Dalvin Cook this offseason, most expected longtime backup Alexander Mattison to take over the role of lead back. Things you talk about he puts on tape. Neither first-round rookie shined quite like Dell did, though it's worth noting that Drew Lock and Nick Mullens started at quarterback in place of Pro Bowlers Geno Smith and Kirk Cousins, respectively. Jalen Mills is having a really good start to this one. If the Vikings are eyeing a committee approach, second-year back Ty Chandler is making a case for a prominent role. He's always listening. Ivan Pace Jr. The Patriots could use a new veteran leader at the position after longtime starter Devin McCourty retired early in the offseason. Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Jordan Addison were. New England is also developing Cunningham as a receiver, and the rookie has "impressed" his coaches with the transition, according to NFL. Things got a lot more exciting in the fourth quarter, though, when undrafted free agent Malik Cunningham got into the game. With standout veteran receivers on the field and drawing attention, these two rookies may be even more productive.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are the reigning champions of the National League. But repeating the feat must first require surviving the gauntlet that is the National League West.
I think I've mentioned just how hungry he is. Former Houston wideout and third-round pick Tank Dell was arguably the brightest spot on the Texans offense against New England. NFL - English. In a Texans offense that is short on proven wide receiver talent, the rookie is likely headed to a prominent early role. It would be a mistake to discuss undrafted rookies and mention Ahlers' standout performance. However, Mattison may not quite be the every-down player that Cook often was. The former first round pick looked good in his limited action, finishing with seven completions and a touchdown. San Francisco 49ers Brock Purdy's pre-season performances raises alarm bells among San Francisco 49ers fans. There as plenty of action to talk about, with rookie quarterbacks Bryce Young and Anthony Richardson making debuts. Elsewhere, Russell Wilson got off to a slow start but eventually threw a touchdown pass to Jerry Jeudy, though the Denver Broncos came up just short against the Arizona Cardinals. However, it wasn't all doom and gloom for Houston's rookie class. Inconsistent line play didn't help, and Zappe, in particular, faced constant pressure. The good news is that Stroud has used his mistakes as a learning experience in the offseason and should do the same after Thursday.
