Each gym has a specific leader and focuses on a specific type. The first batch of gyms you will encounter are the gyms of the region; Johto.
Introduced during the game's Gym rework update in , Gym Badges incentivise players to return to and improve specific Gyms to get these extra rewards, and offers another item for collectors to focus on. Each Gym you interact with will give you a Gym Badge unique to that location. Simply spinning the photo disc will unlock the opening Basic badge. To view your badges, go to your Trainer Profile, scroll down to the Gym Badges section, then tap 'List'. You can also view them all by tapping the Gym Badge map in the bottom left-hand corner when in the list menu.

Gyms return in Pokemon Gold and Silver, and with a new crew of leaders to face the number of badges to collect has bumped up to sixteen. The first eight leaders are all new, mastering types the leaders of old hadn't. Like before, some gyms contain puzzles you must solve to get to the leader. A balanced team is key to getting all the badges, and depending on who you started with you'll have an easier or harder time. Reversing the rule of Red and Blue, the Fire-type starter Cyndaquil will make your trek through Johto an easy one, whereas the Grass-type starter Chikorita is recommended more for those who want a challenge. Puzzle : The first leader in Johto is the young Flying-type master. His gym has no puzzle to complete, and can be challenged as soon as you get to Violet City. However, it is recommended you train in Sprout Tower before taking on the gym challenge. The S-shaped gym hosts two trainers before Falkner, both of whom use the Flying-type birds Pidgey and Spearow that you meet early in the game. Falkner himself isn't that much of a challenge; Cyndaquil or Totodile can take them out quickly. If you chose the former, watch for their special move Mud-Slap, which deals Ground-type damage and lowers your Pokemon's accuracy. Chikorita will need to call in assistance from another Pokemon like Geodude or Onix, who can be caught in the Dark Cave or traded for in Violet City respectively. Puzzle : The gender ambiguous Bugsy is your next challenge in Azalea Town. Like in Violet City, there is no true gym puzzle - simply beat the trainers to get to the leader.

The Gym Leader is Whitney. Trainers who defeat her receive the Plain Badge. The player must navigate their way around the pink-floored Gym by going around the wall of pretty flowers first then entering the middle section. The Trainers in the Gym are hard to avoid and most of them must be battled in order to reach Whitney. Whitney will be located in the middle of the Gym where she can be challenged to earn the Plain Badge.
Strategy: Catch a Geodude or trade for an Onix in order to have Rock-type attacks with which to beat him. Totodile and Cyndaquil will also fair decently, but watch out for Mud-Slap with the latter. Rock-type attacks also work, so if you used Geodude or Onix in the last fight you can make use of them again. Finally, a Mareep or Flaaffy can use Electric-type attacks against Scyther. Gym Leader Whitney has a reputation for being a punishing force with her Normal-type team, specifically Miltank, and a new generation of players may just be discovering this for the first time. Her team consists of a Clefairy lv 18 and Miltank lv You can also catch a Gastly inside of Sprite Tower to prevent any Normal-type moves from having an effect, but this unfortunately does not stop the Rock-type attack Rollout.
