A well-rounded party of characters requires a variety of abilities offered by the classes found within the game. These classes have appeared as character classes in the core books of multiple published editions:. The release of Unearthed Arcana in , for instance, introduced the base class of Barbarian and reworked Paladins to be a type of the new base class "Cavalier". In the original version, an elf was considered a class, for instance. Subsequent editions delineated race and class, even introducing subclasses to give players a choice in what specific flavor of individual classes they would play. Built primarily around their ability to create temporary magic items, the Artificer is a fantastic option for players who enjoy deep customization and the ability to equip a huge number of magic items. With a huge pile of hit points, access to damage resistance to common damage types, and a general preference for large weapons, the Barbarian is a capable melee warrior who typically thrives using simple, repeatable tactics. Rage allows the Barbarian to be exceptionally durable during a few fights per day, allowing you to act aggressively while shrugging off blows that would quickly drop other characters. If you want to do a little bit of everything, the Bard is a great choice. With more skills than most characters, Expertise, and full spellcasting, you can build a bard to fill nearly any roll in your party.

Druids are Wisdom-based spellcasters, which feel fantastic to play. The illusionist class from 1st edition, for example, became a type of specialist wizard; specialists gained the ability to cast extra spells of their chosen school of magic in exchange for the inability to cast spells of "opposed" schools; an illusionist would gain extra spells per day in the school of illusion, but would be denied access to the schools of abjuration, necromancy, and evocation. A Ranger is part Druid, part Rogue, and part Fighter — but it can be challenging to build a character that matches any of these classes in power. Firstly, you need a DM who accepts homebrew classes to play one at all. There are some subclasses that deal with it, like the soul knife rogue, psi warrior fighter, and aberrant mind sorcerer , but these are nowhere near as fleshed-out as other psionic classes and subclasses from previous editions.
