Platos rave
Parth Shiralkar November 8, Opening a school — the first of its kind — near Athens, Plato spent several years teaching and writing at the Academy. He wrote in Socratic dialogues, wherein the plight of the human condition is discussed. This discourse makes up part of a conversation in which Socrates is usually the primary speaker. How do people come to know things? What is aesthetically pleasing? What is good or just? He asks Glaucon to imagine an underground cave, with the only entrance at the very top of a steep climb. Inside the cave there are people, prisoners chained such that they can only see the back wall of the cave. Unable to move their heads in any direction, the prisoners are forced to look at the shadows playing on the back wall, aided by a light source directly behind the prisoners. Their perception of reality, thus, is shaped by their restricted, scarce interactions with their surroundings, mainly by sight. If, then, a prisoner were to escape and examine his surroundings, he would find it difficult to comprehend the existence of actual objects and individuals in the cave, not just shadows. Then, the prisoner shall make the climb up and out of the cave to witness the sun, the moon, nature, reality — everything that he had no idea existed before then.

Ominous indeed The homeowner has a bunch of bird feeders back there and takes pictures of all the visiting birds, squirrels, and chipmunks with a very professional camera setup. He usually leans out an upstairs window or sits on the patio for these photo shoots, and that's the only time I see him, so how do I ask him if I can look at all his sweet squirrel pics? If I open up my window and ask him I'll just scare all the animals away. I don't know the house address to drop off a note or anything. I really want to see the pics, brothers!

Imagine living in a dark place where everything you see is just a shadow, and your whole life you believe these shadows are the only real things. These people have been there since they were born and are tied up so they can only look at the cave wall in front of them. Behind them is a fire, and between the fire and the prisoners, there are people holding up objects that cast shadows on the wall. The prisoners think these shadows are all that is real because they never saw the actual objects or the world outside the cave. Second Definition: The allegory is also about what happens when one prisoner gets free and sees the real world for the first time.
