A Magic: The Gathering fan posted a screenshot to Reddit, proposing the start of "No Magic May" -- a month-long boycott of the beloved tabletop trading card game and related media. Proponents of the boycott claimed it was intended to punish WOTC for sending Pinkerton agents to the home of a YouTuber who possessed a leaked booster box containing cards from the upcoming March of the Machines: The Aftermath expansion pack. The proposal also urged players to refuse to participate in their local game store's "Friday Night Magic" event and refrain from purchasing physical copies of MTG cards. Fans were outraged when the Wizards of the Coast sent Pinkerton agents to raid the house of MTG content creator oldschoolmtg for a leaked booster box of the upcoming March of the Machine : The Aftermath set. When they arrived, the agents allegedly demanded that oldschoolmtg turn over all cards belonging to the booster box. During the incident, the agents also reportedly disturbed the YouTuber's elderly neighbor while threatening oldschoolmtg and his family with possible imprisonment.

For the unaware and those largely outside the US, Pinkerton currently exists as a private detective agency and security guard service owned by Swedish security firm Securitas AB. Their website promotes an image of professionalism that leans on a slanted version of historical Pinkertons; their corporate investigation section specifically touts their track record for helping win civil lawsuits and litigation against current and former employees. It was once the largest private policing force in the world and consistently infiltrated strikes, nascent unions and other pro-worker movements to gather information and sow discord on behalf of owners and executives, a torch the contemporary Pinkertons are all too happy to carry. They were also recently the villains of video game Red Dead Redemption 2, a point which eventually led to a lawsuit against developer Rockstar.
