It was to be actress Jean Fennell's big break. The real-life east-ender had been picked from scores of hopefuls to star in the BBC's brand new soap opera, playing the part of Queen Vic landlady Angie Watts. But after filming just one short scene for the show, Miss Fennell, then 32, was told that she was not right for the role, and the part that would have made her a star was to be recast. Days later, Anita Dobson had stepped into Angie's shoes, and shoulder pads, receiving a round of applause from her fellow cast mates during her first rehearsal.
