It's been 50 years since the infamous December free concert by the Rolling Stones at Altamont Speedway. It was a gig that is remembered for all the wrong reasons, including the death of year-old Meredith Hunter, who was stabbed by a Hells Angels member. The story behind the catastrophic concert doesn't paint the Stones in a particularly flattering light. You know, it's all so fraught with symbolism I'm afraid. Despite all the signs that the free concert, which aimed to continue the buzz of Woodstock earlier in the year, would be a disaster — the organisers pushed on.

By Saul Austerlitz. Looking at the musicians, fans, filmmakers, bikers and journalists present that day, the book — out Tuesday — places the legendarily disastrous show in the context of the political and social changes of the era. In this excerpt, Austerlitz focuses on Meredith Hunter, the year-old African-American man who never returned home from the show. Gimme Shelter , the legendary documentary by Albert and David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin, had shown moviegoers the moment of his death, but what did we know of the last day of his life? Word spread, in late November and early December , about a huge free concert set to come to the Bay Area, and year-old Meredith Hunter told his sister Dixie he was thinking of attending. He had been to the Monterey Jazz Festival and enjoyed himself, and hoped for another glorious day of sunshine and good vibes and music. He did not much care about the Rolling Stones, but the idea of soaking in the love and warmth and companionship that came from hundreds of thousands of well-meaning young people gathered together was too tempting to pass up. Being out in the countryside for the day with his girlfriend and his friends, listening to music, interacting with thousands of like-minded souls — what could be better? Their family had long known that as African-Americans, you were treated differently, wherever you went. You were held to a mysterious standard, one whose rules you often would not know until you had been accused of breaking them. He would use Tide detergent and vinegar to reverse-engineer his hair into a natural do, fluffing it out into a small Afro. He wore big-brimmed hats and colorful jackets, sometimes with matching nail polish on his fingers, and there was a certain swagger to his walk, as if he were more comfortable in his skin than all the other teenage boys and girls still adjusting to their adult bodies.

Darkness came early in the Bay Area in December, and with its arrival, the temperature fell precipitously. Some of the crowd had been overdressed for a warm day in the sun; now, most of the crowd was underdressed for what was proving to be a very chilly evening. All across the speedway, small tongues of fire lapped into the sky, with paper bags and trash set ablaze to provide some much-needed warmth. Across a shallow ravine from the stage, there were hills ringed with wooden fences, and fans had begun to disassemble them, tossing the fence posts onto bonfires. The air filled with the oily, acrid smell of burning garbage and creosote.

In fairness, it made sense to try to recreate the perfection of Woodstock on the west coast. The Rolling Stones just finished their tour of North America last week, having received criticism for their high ticket prices. Being salt of the earth kinda folks, they decided to put on a free concert to make it up to their fans. There would be peace, love, music and The Hells Angels Motorcycle Club to guard the stage.

In December, , the photographer Bill Owens got a call from his friend Beth Bagby, who occasionally shot photos for the Associated Press. It was also part of a return to public view for the Rolling Stones, who had started touring again, after nearly two years off the road. The concert was a success, an entirely peaceful event financed and filmed by Granada Television.

Following 17 days of testimony, an eight-man, four-woman jury deliberated for 12 and a half hours before Passaro was acquitted on grounds of self-defense. All those elements combined plus a lot of cultural and sub-cultural and political and even astrological things were all converging on the Altamont raceway on December 6, The band hoped to play an abbreviated set, then call a halt to the misbegotten concert and send the fans home. The Red Cross workers rushed Hunter into a waiting station wagon, and urged Bredehoft in to accompany him. Even for the Stones, the signs were there from the beginning that this was not the peaceful hippy gathering Jagger had naively hoped for. She remembered that earlier in the day, she had spotted a first-aid station nearby. This was their party now. Without being airlifted to hospital, Hunter had no chance. Cox began carrying Hunter in the other direction, away from the stage, hoping to get to the medical tent. The verdict, too, was no surprise. Five bikers surrounded one teenager, assaulting him without justification or fear of interruption, as on so many other occasions that day. The Rolling Stones — last stateside as a band in December — had returned. Meredith Hunter was not just a name, not just a dead man at a rock concert. An Angel stepped into her path and asked her where she was going.

She screamed at the Angels, pleading with them to stop: stop the fighting, stop the assault on her boyfriend, stop the madness. Hunter fell to the ground, and bumped against some part of the scaffolding, perhaps its pillars. Please, she asked, would somebody help out her boyfriend? Only a few minutes later, two new figures, a man and a woman, approached Bredehoft. There was no point. She could do nothing. As Jagger kept dancing, his hands atop his head, his elbows out, encased in his own private world of pleasure, it was clear, to one concertgoer at least, that the lead singer of the Rolling Stones was ill-inclined to help. The Angel then leapt off the stage and chased after Hunter, joined by four of his fellow bikers.
