Nursing is a vital profession that plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities. In Ontario, nurses have been working tirelessly to ensure that patients receive the care they need, especially during these challenging times of the COVID pandemic. The ONCA is a legally binding agreement between nurses and their employers that governs their working conditions, pay scales, benefits, and other terms of employment. The ONCA is essential to ensure that nurses are treated fairly and can provide high-quality care to their patients. The agreement sets out minimum standards for working conditions, such as hours of work, rest periods, and breaks. It also establishes wage and benefit packages that provide compensation for the skills, knowledge, and expertise that nurses bring to their work.

Ontario hospital nurses will be getting raises of what their union says amounts to an average of 11 per cent over two years, with the arbitrator citing a staffing crisis and high inflation. Nurses and government critics have blamed Bill for making it more difficult to recruit and retain nurses, particularly while they were on the front lines of fighting the COVID pandemic. This time, we were heard. William Kaplan wrote in the arbitration award that there are more than 9, registered nurse vacancies in Ontario hospitals and compensation is one of the best ways to attract staff. The ONA says that equals roughly 11 per cent in the two years for the average nurse. Kaplan also wrote that high inflation is starting to be taken into account in free, collective bargaining, which his decision attempts to replicate. The decision also gives hospitals more flexibility in short-term reassignments for nurses, so it is not considered a layoff when they need to manage staff shortages, and it creates dedicated isolation pay for exposure to communicable diseases. OHA President Anthony Dale said the improved wage grid will benefit new and early career nurses in particular. Even though that ruling is under appeal, the nurses were able to go back to the arbitrator to secure additional wages for under the previous contract, since the contracts were subject to reopening if Bill was repealed or declared invalid.

The Ontario Nurses' Association started negotiating a new contract Monday for hospital nurses and the union is planning to take its push for higher wages beyond the bargaining table. The nurses, and other broader public sector workers, have been subject for three years to a wage restraint law known as Bill , which capped increases at one per cent a year. Bernie Robinson, the interim president of the ONA, said the last contract left nurses feeling disrespected and devalued. An Ontario court found Bill unconstitutional late last year, but the government has filed a notice of intent to appeal. As talks begin, the union is planning a series of "escalating actions," starting with having nurses wear stickers while at work that highlight the bargaining priorities of better wages, better staffing and better care.
