The project began in when I was invited to give a talk on the panel during their Post Studio conference. I used the opportunity to take one of their courses on Curatorial Practice led by Swedish curator Odun arts Lind, odun arts.

The Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagospresents 1 Work, a new project that invites an artist to present a single work as a way of highlighting a specific medium, engaging a particular idea or creating an ambitious new work which may not be possible through other platforms or to simply use the space as a laboratory or studio that encourages a direct engagement with a diverse audience. The first 1 Work project is presented by Odun Orimolade, for whom drawing is a principal component of her artistic practice, as well as being central to her research interests. Her waiflike configurations allow a play of inventive and intuitive biomorphic images to evolve producing drawings that map volume, contextualize place and more tacitly than explicitly invites the viewer to interact, to react and even to question. The combination of research, process, and interaction are tools which contribute to the articulation of a trajectory that attempts to evolve an artistic language that is personal but also collective, spontaneous yet measured. In so doing she hopes to deconstruct a received history of drawing by activating an alternative language that prioritizes locality and specificity. The 1 Work project will unfold across the wall over a day period. Orimolade lives and works in Lagos as an artist and a lecturer at her alma mater.

Predominantly, I continue to be pre occupied with an overlapping, porous, layered and intertwined presence of realities through time and space all at once, one and the same without distinctions or alternates and the influences and the evidences of existence in it. This permits a myriad of investigations into a plethora of possibilities. To this I strive to generate an archive of the unseen in imagesof the constantly present intangible. This is with a view that does not separate physiognomy from the intangible or invisible. It is of a view that they are assessed and recognized by the physical reaction that manifests their presence. There are a myriad of analogies that attest to this discourse. They may be assessed through our senses, emotions, perceptions, cognition even beliefs not to mention the highly microscopic spheres of actual physiognomy and our association with cosmology and the environment we are in contact with. These diffusing realities have tangible manifestations of their existence and are also supported by a wealth of accumulating archive of documentation in images. Through our senses we connect emotion, which is an arguing point of how the presentation of our reactions attests to the actuality of our connection to these energies or existences. We cannot see or touch the air but we feel it. We take account and can follow the progress of developing these innumerable aspects of our existence beginning from the point of the unknown, there is the travel through a mass of information that returns us right back to the point of the unknown. It becomes difficult to question the unseen other than to begin the cycle of research again. I try to machinate emotional intensity and spiritual reaction through an exploration of the biomorphic, flowing figurative and abstract modes.

It seeks to create new audiences and to prioritise media such as photography, film and video, performance and installation art which have been under-represented in Nigeria, odun arts.

The works, intricate pencil and charcoal drawing installations, video, and performance, are described as a portal between the knowledge she consumes and the memories she has retained. Because knowledge can be memory and memory can work as knowledge. In universe-crafting and mark-making, Orimolade relies on her imagination as a source of valuable knowledge to replenish existing gaps. And in her new worlds, nothing is lost or missing and she invites her viewers to revel in this sentiment. Knowing is also an invitation to the public to journey through our collective subconsciousness to discover what has been and what could be. An interactive aspect of the installation encourages visitors to explore differential knowledge based on a set of stamps and symbols that could be used to create works for themselves and the artist. Odun Orimolade is a Nigerian artist and academic based in Lagos.
