Enchanting is the process of adding magical properties to an item. An item can only be enchanted once. However, simultaneous enchantments can be placed during the single enchantment process, if the item enchanted is a charge-based item see below. Enchanting an item requires magical knowledge of the type of enhancement to be added. The Hero must know a spell with the same effect and be of sufficient skill in the appropriate school of magic to cast the particular spell version they have. For example, if the Hero knows Lighten Load and does not know Ease Burden, then they cannot do Feather enchantments until they reach journeyman expertise in Alteration or obtain an apprentice-level Feather spell. An alternative to obtaining a spell at the correct level is to obtain the desired effect from a Doomstone as there are no skill restrictions on casting powers. The Hero will also need a Soul Gem containing a trapped soul. The greater the soul trapped, the more powerful an enchantment can be made. Unlike other The Elder Scrolls games, characteristics and skill levels have no bearing on the power of the enchantment, the soul size is the sole determining factor. Mages Guild members may simply pick up these loose soul gems for free. Alternately, if the Frostcrag Spire add-on has been purchased, there will be a personal Altar of Enchanting in the Spire.

Both follow the same basic procedure. Choose an item to enchant, pick one or more magical effects to enchant into the item, define parameters on those effects, select a power source for the enchantment, and give the item a name. After this is all done, the process is complete. All enchantments on weapons are cast when a melee weapon makes contact with a live target, or when a bow or staff is fired. Such effects are charged; the weapon has a set number of charges depending upon the power source, and a certain number of those charges are used for each strike or launch depending on the effect s in question. All enchantments on clothing, armor, and jewelry work constantly. There are no charges to these items; the magic effect is permanent, and works as long as you wear the item. Magical staves are of the "cast upon use" variety, but it is not possible for you to create these except for the custom one you get by following the Mages Guild quest line.
