Pauldrons of black feathers adorn its shoulders. Each nuckelavee is a greedy fiend, eager to collect any magic item or resource it can use to further its eventual ascension into a fiend lord. It is not above stealing the good luck of its allies to fuel its own continued rampage. For this reason, other fiends tend to dislike the nuckelavee, and thus it is usually encountered alone.

The Nuckelavee I am creating for the fledgling Orkney based setting for Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition, is based on the creature of the same name which is in the folklore of the Orkney Islands in Northern Scotland. The islands, along with the Shetland Islands, have a strong Norse link having been occupied and under the rule of the Scandinavians from the late 8th century until the midth century when the islands were part of a dowry given by Christian I, King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden when his daughter married King James III of Scotland. Despite coming under Scottish rule the islands maintained much of their Norse heritage with this and the Scandinavian folklore and legend still strong today. Like most of the creatures of folklore, the Nuckelavee appears to have its origins in Norse folklore. The Scottish version is the Kelpie. Marwick indicates that these types, going under several names knuklavi, knopi, or knavie were the Celtic water spirits. In Orkney the [fresh] water horse is known as the Noggelvi or Nuggle.
