As adult instances are becoming more popular and their reach through the fediverse grows, content on those instances are making their way into the lives of those who are not wanting to see it or are at work and have fed timeline open.. I think it would be a good idea to implement NSFW mode which would allow safe browsing of the fed for those not wishing to see such content. I see tagging Toots with nsfw already stops that content from showing.

The idea is to offer Mastodon users a way to connect with, follow and join topic-based timelines, called Communities, that can help them make better sense of content scattered across the distributed social web. Newsmast also credits the Mastodon app and Mozilla-backed startup Mammoth for the inspiration around Communities. On Mammoth, Smart Lists offer similar functionality as they curate topics of interest and news sources into easy-to-access lists for others to follow. Image Credits: Newsmast screenshot. Users could then connect to that server in place of the Newsmast server within the Newsmast app. For example, someone could make a server focused just on art or AI, and then have dedicated communities within that server that users could follow and engage with. Like any other post, Community content can be liked, reposted boosted , replied to, bookmarked, followed or added to lists.

Mastodon is a free and open-source software for running self-hosted social networking services. Each user is a member of a specific Mastodon server that can interact seamlessly with users in any other server. This is intended to give users the flexibility to select a server whose policies they prefer, but keep access to a larger federated social network. Mastodon is powered by the ActivityPub protocol, making it part of the Fediverse ensemble of services such as Lemmy , Pixelfed , Friendica , and PeerTube. Mastodon was created by Eugen Rochko and announced on Hacker News in October , [9] and gained significant adoption in in the wake of Twitter's acquisition by Elon Musk. The project is maintained by German non-profit Mastodon gGmbH. Mastodon servers run social networking software that is capable of communicating using W3C 's ActivityPub standard, which has been implemented since version 1. Since version 2. Users post short-form status messages, historically known as "toots", [16] for others to see. On a standard Mastodon instance, these messages can include up to text-based characters, greater than Twitter's character limit.

Humblr commented Dec 8, Is there any progress on this? It would also be nice for users to allow all content to show even if CW is applied to that post. It is avatars and profile headers that are causing the most issues. Esteth commented Dec 9, Whether it is a global flag, where an instance can be flagged as adult nsfw and content will only be visible on that instance, even if reblogged from somewhere else, or a switch on the profile, which works global. On humblr. Images and videos can be hidden as well, even while leaving the text visible. I see tagging Toots with nsfw already stops that content from showing. This reduces the initial time investment in self-hosting Mastodon substantially. While I am posting my images as sensitive content, many people on humblr do not do that. Flagging an instance as NSFW would greatly enhance usability. From there, it'd certainly be possible to let instances decide how they wish to mark an account as having a certain age whether that's the user's choice, a moderator setting a flag on the account, or a third-party service performing age verification , which would then influence the content they see and the reach that it has. I think profile tagging is the most important but instance wide while selective in terms of who uses it, is also needed. By doing so, the tags are visible again to everyone, like minors and "normal" users.
The latest point release of Mastodon adds a small new feature that might have a significant impact on all adult content creators on the platform. The feature has a fancy, memorable name: Blurhash.
Then we can have a setting for instance admins to default all new accounts to be marked as sensitive, if so they wish. So little information is transmitted through blurhash that is is safe to display even if the underlying content is inappropriate, and the resulting gradient is pleasant to look at. Every post with hidden media looks the same. As adult instances are becoming more popular and their reach through the fediverse grows, content on those instances are making their way into the lives of those who are not wanting to see it or are at work and have fed timeline open.. It would also be nice for users to allow all content to show even if CW is applied to that post. Problem is, this only fixes some of the content. The difference is, though, that the user doesn't have to make a list of sensitive accounts themselves. When it's enabled, visitors have to confirm they wish to see the content. I don't know how to resolve this situation. The strange thing happens if someone from the general instance or any other reblogs my posts. So in conclusion I think it should go both ways: Allowing instance admins to flag their own instances and their users precautionally as NSFW, but also, and more importantly, being able to enforce those flags for foreign instances. By doing so, the tags are visible again to everyone, like minors and "normal" users. Neither of those really solve the problem of hiding sensitive content but being able to expand when desired.
