Full of twists and turns to keep even the most reluctant readers hooked. Definitely worth a spot on your classroom bookshelf UKS2! Brilliant book!

Culture TV. There have been six novels in the series, the latest, Crossfire, appearing last summer — and Stormzy has given her a big shout-out as his favourite novelist. While it keeps the basic set-up of the novel — an apartheid world in which the dominant black Crosses treat the white Noughts as racial inferiors — and the central story — ill-starred young lovers, Cross Sephy and Nought Callum, attempt to forge a relationship across the divide — much else has changed. The novel itself is Young Adult, with Sephy and Callum contributing alternate chapters as they tell their entwined stories. Callum is 15 as the novel opens, while Sephy is excited about her 14th birthday party. This is a post-watershed show. Callum and Sephy are older, 17 or It opens with a ferocious confrontation between delinquent Nought youths, including Callum Jack Rowan, 23 in fact and his angry brother Jude Josh Dylan , and violent Cross police wielding knobkerries, with one youth being severely injured and phone footage of the assault going viral. Callum is applying to be one of the first Noughts at an elite Cross military academy, Mercypoint. Every scene derived from the novel has been recast as more aggressively confrontational. In the novel, Malorie Blackman deliberately left skin colour ambiguous at the start.

The show clearly has compassion for underdogs, and displays how power corrupts. Callum and Sephy are not sharply drawn characters -- there's too much plot to allow for lengthy characterizations -- and some other characters, such as Sephy's boyfriend Lekan, come off as a bit stereotypical.

However, the micro-aggressions and racism experienced by Callum and fellow Noughts are clear and affecting; it's obvious that many darker-skinned characters relish their privilege though not every Cross is racist. The violence of a political revolution is downplayed; though characters die on-screen, we see very little blood and no gore. A murder takes place as we watch; a man covers the face of a character in a hospital bed until he smothers to death.

Saying that, it was thought provoking and very well written, but just not the feeling I want to have when I'm reading a book.

I didn't enjoy reading this book at all because it made me feel really uncomfortable, and the content was violent and scary. Win review copi Costumes are gorgeous, colourful for the Crosses, grungy with the Noughts, and matched by hair and accessories, although undoubtedly Baxendale was short-changed with a lumpy old cardigan. Artwork in museums, homes, and public places only depict Crosses. Against this backdrop, Sephy Masali Baduza , the daughter of a powerful Cross official, coincidentally meets up with Callum Jack Rowan , the son of struggling Noughts. Josh Dylan Jude McGregor.
