Ever since the release of FNaF 4, the identity of the Nightmares has been hotly contested. Some of the most popular ideas include them being a dream, nightmare animatronics, real robots altered by sound nightmare animatronics, or even real giant murder tooth monsters.
The Nightmare Animatronics are heavily withered, exaggeratedly nightmarish versions of the existing animatronics that haunt the nightmares of either Michael Afton or the Crying Child. Alongside with the twisted animatronics from the novel trilogy's universe, the nightmare animatronics appear as the most menacing out of all animatronic classes. They seem to have shared personality traits with the Twisted Animatronics. In this case, they are all subservient purely to their creator, William Afton, but have also exhibited relentlessness, when chasing their victims, and ruthlessness, when killing them.

While they appear as moving animatronics in game, they are in reality illusions as the result of the hallucinogenic gas that has been put into the chamber. Their true forms are mounted suit parts on rolling mechanical stands to emulate animatronics hunting someone. Nightmare Freddy is a major antagonist and one of the nightmare animatronics of the Five Nights at Freddy's series, who first appeared in Five Nights at Freddy's 4.
