The Cult are the enigmatic main antagonists of the adventure game Night in the Woods. They are a mysterious group who worship an entity named "The Black Goat", and are responsible for many of the disappearances around the town of Possum Springs. The Cult was apparently formed by a miner called Ed Skudder, who, along with his co-worker Jim Dorney, were both sent to search the mine for leftover minerals before its closure. During their search, Ed and Jim discovered a seemingly bottomless pit, in which Jim stumbled into and "never hit bottom". Ed tried calling out for Jim, but instead was answered by singing- the Song of the Black Goat. The entity gave Ed a dark offering: it would bring life and prosperity back to Possum Springs, but in return, Ed had to sacrifice people to the pit for the Black Goat to consume. Ed Skudder took this offer and left the mines. Over the next few years, Ed Skudder slowly built up his Cult, exploiting the desperation of the ex-miners and other townsfolk, unsure of the town's future and losing faith in the local Church. According to some of the Cultists, Ed Skudder had a power they referred to as "The Glimmer", a sort of natural charisma granted to him by the Black Goat which he used to draw people to his side. The Cult worked in secret, snatching away folks that they believed wouldn't be missed- drunkards, drifters and delinquents- to be sacrificed to the Black Goat. At least three other people are offered to the Black Goat over the course of the game, but the Cult is known to have sacrificed at least 39 people overall. Mae follows the hooded figure and investigates, but eventually loses track of them and is taken home by her aunt. The Cult properly appear where Mae, Bea, Gregg and Angus stumble across the entrance to the mine and witness the brutal punishment of Lurv. He was being punished for leaving the disembodied arm by the Clik-Clak Diner, and thus risking the group's discovery. Lurv pleas for forgiveness or leniency but is promptly denied and the other cult members state that his family will be looked after.
