After decades of efforts to improve the depth and breadth of recycling — with Niagara a provincial leader in the field — the Region is opting out of its recycling responsibilities starting Jan. Councillors voted to accept staff recommendation Tuesday as part of their response to the transition to a new producer-responsible blue box program ordered by the province. As a result, the Region will turn its recycling program over to organizations representing the producers of products and packaging. Residents will begin seeing the first of many changes on Jan. Tom Insinna said. The Region will continue to pay the bills and be responsible for garbage collection, the Green Bin program, yard waste and the management of its landfills.
