NAOJ offers astronomers nationwide joint usage of research facilities including observational facilities such as the Subaru Telescope and NAOJ Nobeyama radio telescopes, as well as supercomputers. However, our campuses are not just in Japan. Many faculty members belonging to the Astronomical Science Program stay there long-term for research and engage in education in the Astronomical Science Program. Our institute promotes astronomical research in Japan and holds regular events and open campus as an open research institute. Subaru Telescope consists of the Summit Facility near the summit of Maunakea at an altitude of 4, m and the Hiro Base Facility where research projects, development, and administration are conducted. There is no public transportation to the Hilo Base Facility. Visiting Guide. Leading-edge observational instruments, including the Nobeyama m Radio Telescope, the Nobeyama Millimeter Array, and the Nobeyama Radioheliograph have been established here to pursue various research themes related to the Universe. Once the upgrades are completed, KAGRA will observe gravitational waves emitted from high energy astronomical events such as collisions of black holes in coordination with other large gravitational wave detectors around the world to extend our understanding of the Universe. November 10, Science. Using new data from the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have measured the abundance of oxygen in the early Universe. The findings show that the amount of oxygen in galaxies increased rapidly within million years after the birth of the Universe, and has remained as abundant as observed in modern galaxies since then. This early appearance of oxygen indicates that the elements necessary for life were present earlier than expected. In the early Universe, shortly after the Big Bang, only light elements such as hydrogen, helium, and lithium existed. Heavier elements like oxygen were subsequently formed through nuclear fusion reactions within stars and dispersed into galaxies, primarily through events like supernova explosions. This ongoing process of element synthesis, unfolding over the vast expanse of cosmic history, created the diverse elements that constitute the world and living organisms around us. The team found that most of the galaxies had oxygen abundances similar to modern galaxies. But out of the 7 earliest galaxies in the sample, those that existed when the Universe was only million years old, 6 of them had roughly half the predicted oxygen content.

The observatory of the Subaru Telescope was officially established in April , following the completion of its base facility building in Hilo, Hawaii. Due to the difficulty of operating at high altitude, most of the support work for the telescope is conducted in Hilo by a staff of about people. The Hilo Base Facility houses several research laboratories, a library, and extensive computing facilities including a supercomputer. Subaru Telescope is located on the summit region of Maunakea, a dormant volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. The summit of Maunakea is an isolated peak that protrudes above most of the Earth's weather systems. The air pressure up on Maunakea is only two-third of what it is at the sea level.

Preservation and Exhibition of Important Historical Documents We store about books, including, Japanese and Chinese books especially those preserved by the Tenmonkata Astronomer for the Edo Shogunate , almanacs, and occidental books. The Four-dimensional Digital Universe Project 4D2U Project is an astronomical data visualizing project developed by NAOJ astronomers to help watchers experience the creation of the universe in the most realistic way. Latest update : Taking advantage of an ideal environment for astronomical observations, we offer educational programs such as school tours and hands-on observations. Japan's Public Holidays and Long Weekends in In addition to the cm telescope, smaller telescopes are installed outside to track other celestial bodies such as the Moon, planets, star clusters, and others. Public Visits At NAOJ Mitaka Campus there are exhibition rooms open to the public to display the latest research and preserved observational instruments. Our institute promotes astronomical research in Japan and holds regular events and open campus as an open research institute. We also serve as one of the Japanese representative institutes in this field, contributing to the international time-comparison network, the maintenance of International Atomic Time TAI , and the determination of world-wide standard times through the operation of four cesium atomic clocks and the use of GPS satellites.
