Village girls in traditional garb danced for us; village elders performed a bonding ceremony baci with dried flowers, chicken bones, feathers, sticks, and trinkets in a centrepiece. Then we sat down for five courses of traditional Lao food. I was blown away by the food stalls at the night market in Luang Prabang — a mind-boggling array, but I loved the stalls with grilled whole fish and meats, clamped between bamboo sticks. So delicious. I nearly sent my neighbours to their death in Luang Prabang when they visited a year ago, recommending the grilled foods at an outdoor restaurant in a bamboo grove. When our friends crossed it, they and their two sons were nearly swept away by the rushing river.
