Some players loved it and some hated it, and the difference came down to the mechanics and the Standard format which was shaky, to say the least. Two new mtg energy counters debuted in this block: energy, and vehicles.

Energy is a resource and mechanic that was introduced in the Kaladesh block Kaladesh and Aether Revolt. The mechanic enables the production of energy counters , which may be used to pay the costs of activated and triggered abilities. An energy counter is a counter that, unlike most other counters, is placed on players rather than objects. Most cards that grant energy counters also provide a way to spend them. However, because they are placed on the player rather than a specific object , energy counters from one card can be saved up and spent on the abilities of other cards. Energy counters don't go away as phases or steps end, or as the turn ends, and no cards printed in the Kaladesh block remove energy counters from other players.

Magic: The Gathering is a game that is fundamentally about resource management. Every deck uses mana as a resource, as well as the library and hand, while some tap into other resources such as the graveyard and even your own health. One of the lesser-used resources, thanks to how rarely it's been supported, is energy counters. Although decks built around energy counter mechanics were considered among the strongest Standard decks of all time, they have found little success in eternal formats such as Modern and Commander. Energy counters are placed on players rather than on permanents, similar to poison counters. However, there are no built-in effects on energy counters, allowing you to accumulate any number of them to spend later. This makes them easy to work with and difficult for your opponents to counter.
