Similar to its predecessor Warband, the game cleverly blends 3 games together like a cross between Kingdom Come Deliverance , Total War and Chivalry 2 - it's not just a role playing game with NPC dialogue, an evolving story and character progression, it's also a very good strategy game where players manage their own clan and eventually an entire kingdom, recruiting troops, setting up businesses and trade routes, buying or stealing supplies, as well as all the typical tactics, troop placements, orders and formations that would be expected in a fully fledged RTS title. There may only be a portion of those on the battlefield at any given time like at once, but the effect is visually impressive as players charge their horses into ranks of infantry as part of a large force, with bodies and arrows flying through the air in a real maelstrom of action that sums up the chaos and tactics of a medieval battle perfectly. The question many new players may ask however is how do I get into all this?

For the mercenary troops in Viking Conquest, click here. Mercenaries are hired, often very powerful soldiers that can be paid to fight by your side. They are easily found in taverns , but they can also be acquired by attacking caravans and then convincing the surviving caravan guards to join you. You can also rescue them from parties that have destroyed caravans. If recruited from taverns, they will demand an initial fee which is based on the type of mercenaries and number available. The more mercenaries you find at once, the better deal they will offer. If you do not have enough money for the whole group, they will allow you to hire only as many of them as you can currently afford. Faction parties will regularly attack any caravans that belong to their enemies, so it is quite common to find a faction party carrying a few Caravan Guards. Mercenaries should be used sparingly to supplement an army intent on besieging a town or castle, or to fill in the roles of a particular unit a faction is lacking in. Their higher upkeep costs make them unattractive to most adventurers or captains, but as expendable soldiers they are abundant and put up a reasonable fight. Mercenaries are still hired the same way.
Some of it is just the game, though.

You can hire in taverns and directly add to your army, and Mercenary armies that you can employ that will significantly add to your numbers.

The player may choose to become a Mercenary for a faction. The function is similar, but not equal to vassalage. To become a mercenary, you need to make a mercenary contract with one of the factions. This will allow you to fight their enemies and participate in sieges, but you will not receive any fiefs like you would if you were a vassal. You may also be expected to recruit more troops into your party. To make a contract you must ask a vassal of the faction that you want to join if they have a task. There is quite a high chance that he will ask you to become a mercenary if that faction is at war, which you can then accept. Mercenary contracts last for 30 days in Warband , and can be renewed for another 30 days.
