Oh shit.
Monome's enigmatic Norns can be anything you want it to be — if you're prepared to put the work in The year saw the publication of a short science fiction story by Larry Niven entitled The Soft Weapon , which featured a small, mysterious, technologically advanced hand-held device capable of completely changing shape and function according to the position of a sliding control. The characters in the story attempt, with limited success, to determine what the various 'modes' of the weapon are and how they are activated and controlled. The story came to mind whilst I was exploring Norns, a stand-alone synthesis, effects and control unit from Monome, the small New York-based company better known for their illuminated grid control surfaces. The Norns I'll treat the word as a singular, although technically it is a plural is a neatly finished metal box a little smaller than a paperback book, with some knobs, buttons and a small screen on top, and audio jacks and USB sockets on the back. There is no text or iconography anywhere on the unit — nothing is labelled — and it's not immediately clear what the box does, or how it does it. Unlike Niven's fictional weapon, the Norns is not dangerous so long as you keep the headphone volume under control , but it is very much a 'soft' device: immediately reconfigurable into one of a potentially unlimited number of operational functions with the twist of a knob and the click of a button.

Please reach out to the seller for post-purchase support. Before purchasing, be sure to confirm with the seller the storage capacity of the unit. Here are instructions for standard norns ; shields have swappable SD cards. When you receive your unit, we highly recommend starting with a fresh installation of the core software. What steps are necessary to reproduce the issue? What additional hardware was connected to norns at the time of the issue? This includes controllers, wifi dongles, external hubs, etc. If a connected MIDI controller is not functioning as expected, it may be due to a script that does not explicitly allow for MIDI control from virtual ports other than port 1. Either reassign your MIDI controller to port 1 or insert this bit of code into the script. All grid editions will work with norns, but some scripts may be coded for varibright levels that your hardware may not support.
A script is free to use the encoders, buttons and display for pretty much anything it chooses: the display supports text and graphics, and scripts can use the physical controls to navigate between different parameter monome buy or change parameter values, monome buy, much as on a conventional digital instrument.
Will consider their Norns when it comes back into stock, or aleph if I can somehow find one…. I kinda realize the community and machine is very relate-able to the organelle. But there seems to be a lot more technical stuff to the monome community. Do you have to be a programming expert to own these things? There are pre-made applications out there for the devices, correct? What I exactly want out of the grid is something to sequence a eurorack and something to generate interesting patterns and melodies.
I personally often buy modules at Modularsquare in France or at Schneidersladen in Germany. Looks like they need to have a restock, but Escape from Noise in Sweden certainly sell Monome. Maybe ask them if they can get hold of what you want? MUCH better to have potential customers asking than manufacturers pushing. I used to buy my monome stuff from Escape from noise, which by the way its a great shop, so is Ulf. Posting charges are good. So the hunt continues. I bought my Shield from Monome.

After all, there will be a Pi5 in years, and what then? If you are a coder, or are willing to learn, the Norns' appeal is clearer. The main difference is the newer ones have variable brightness which I think is necessary when using the eurorack modules. An optional kit to upgrade it to USB bus power is available separately. USB and OSC interfacing is all controlled by the built-in scripting system, which is also used to set up and control the audio system, and draw to the screen. The characters in the story attempt, with limited success, to determine what the various 'modes' of the weapon are and how they are activated and controlled. Maybe eventually, I could consider this to be a performance launch tool. So what of the Norns? Post by tommygee » Sun Sep 12, pm. I kinda realize the community and machine is very relate-able to the organelle. Too bad Molar has been discontinued, it is still my Nr. I kinda realize the community and machine is very relate-able to the organelle. I may look more in depth at how might work for me as well. MIDI pitch and pitch-bend controller were faithfully tracked, right up until I started hitting the randomise function portrayed on screen as a the roll of a pair of animated dice.
But what is it really about? We turn to reviewer Andreas Roman to find out.
This was my first real contact with the Lua language, but it is simple and elegant, so I was able to start creating interactive lighting patterns for a Monome grid within a few minutes. I still use pages platform for stacking many apps together once every while with Molar vst only vst that exist for monome grid. You can see this at certain angles and you can feel it when you run your finger along the edge the dents feel smooth though, not rough. Post by rotexo » Wed Apr 13, pm. Long time monome user here, still have the walnut version with no variable brightness. If I like it well enough I may even get an aluminum front panel made or make it and I can easily carve a walnut base for myself. Happy 15th! Really happy to see that the older versions will be compatible with RPI4! One thing to keep in mind is that nothing is stored on the grid devices versus organelle. Re: Monome norns Post by andersnils » Sun Sep 12, pm Surprisingly the biggest thing for me is the mixer and tape recorder -- if I'm not using Norns for anything in particular I can record my modular with reverb and compression without needing my computer. It really is an open-ended box of buttons to use as an interface to an application. Why not join their forum to learn more: Lines.
