Never a stranger to producing multiple options, Mizuno golf introduced three different iron sets to make up the JPX roster. Those sets include the Tour, Forged, and Hot Metal irons. In an effort to find the top performing set of JPX irons, time was spent taking the Second Challenge, which resulted in uniting the JPX Hot Metal and Forged irons as part of one set for this review. Delivering on ball speed and forgiveness, with a more compact playable design, the forged provides the ultimate balanced attack. Earlier this year Mizuno started a fitting campaign for their JPX lineup, which they referred to as the Second Challenge. For anyone not familiar with the shaft optimizer, what it does is recommend multiple shaft options for a golfer based on various data points, such as clubhead speed, tempo, shaft kick, shaft toe down effect, and the shaft release factor. Players can obviously choose outside of those three choices if they want, but if one is going through this process, it might be best to try the top three first. Once the shaft recommendations are made, it becomes time to test those shafts in that very same iron head. That aspect alone brings a certain comfort to the entire process once a fitter starts swapping out shafts. With the full fitting clocking in around 15 minutes, there is plenty of time to hit multiple shaft combinations allowing players the ability to either decide by numbers if the facility is using a launch monitor , or by a combination of feel and flight. With some time to spare, balls where hit off a lie board to finalize the fitting procedure. As with all mixed sets, it became a question of where to make that change, and in this instance, the split came at the 7-iron. Boasting a larger club head with a wider sole, the Hot Metal line was much more suited to be played in the longer irons, while the JPX Forged were the ones desired from the 7-iron through gap wedge. One of the big questions that golfers face when going the split set route is not just a matter of how the change in body characteristics will treat them, but how well the set will naturally flow together. Going with the combination of irons is really a preference that allows players to achieve their preferred look, feel, and performance throughout the set.

I'd chalk this up to a mizuno 900 forged of play and also not being properly fit. The optimizer gave me 3 shafts, but my fitter hid the results from me at first. The truth is that even the pros miss and you should note a general progression on tour towards more forgiving irons.

Mizuno is constantly seeking to push performance boundaries, with industry-challenging breakthroughs such as Boron-infusion, and now Chromoly M, a new material found in the ultra-thin face of the latest JPX Hot Metal iron. The wedges also have their own material — a softer X30 steel that offers all the feel and precision around the greens that even distance-seeking golfers demand. Chromoly opened that door.

The closest competitor was the PX Yellow, but the results weren't enough to warrant the upcharge, and my fitter surprisingly agreed. He said no, but we all felt that it just wouldn't be right not to. Really just everything I want in a ball for my game. I wasn't sure if I'd like this club or not. I made a good swing and again got another beautiful high draw. Distance since switching to the Tours has increased slightly as well.

I have taken two lessons out of my series of five and I am already seeing results; my ball striking has improved greatly and I am hitting many more greens in regulation than I am used to! When I was fit, it was by far the best marriage of distance and consistency I had. I have not been disappointed. As I mentioned in my range portion, it took a couple rounds and a couple range sessions to get these dialed in but once I was able to they've performed way past what i expected.
