Minicraft 1/144

It is really hard to add to all the usual stuff I have said over the past year about this aircraft.

Like airliners. Anyway, I decided, upon looking at the toy-like wheels, that this one would be built gear up as I did the B-1B. First thing I did was to glue the main gear doors onto the nacelles. The larger doors fit perfectly with no problem. The smaller ones fit in place, but they are flat vice the curved surface they should be.

I only took one photo of the finished model for some reason, but I've added a couple of extra shots I took before I realised that I'd forgotten to paint the nose cone! Being a predominantly white aircraft, the blue background probably suits it better anyway. It's just a shame I was too lazy to take more photos once the nose cone was done! Decals are a combination of Hawkeye Models Australia livery , Authentic Airliners Decals windows , and kit decals wing panels and walkway lines. The worst aspect of this kit, far and away, are the propellers. They're just misshapen lumps, and the prop blades break off just by thinking about them. Looks good Kev. Seeing this, I could get tempted again, if I could find one? Did you have to do much remedial work, other than the self destructing props? You've achieved a great looking result with this. Thanks for the kind words, Steve. I really didn't do any fixes on this model, but the following photos show a bit of the construction work, including how crude the fit is in places.

Some really nice reflection style cockpit windows and passenger window decals, along with walk guides for the wings. I was glad that I hadn't installed the turrets by trapping them between the fuselage halves as the instructions recommend. The decal sheet is very well minicraft 1/144 and fully in register, which is a big surprise for a Scalemaster sheet, minicraft 1/144.

The review is here. Then I discovered that the kit was a rebox of the earlier Minicraft B, and in fact that kit was made from the Crown molds. So the model itself is over 30 years old. It would be unfair to judge this kit on just the plastic, so I built two models, one using the kit decals, one using "home made" decals. It was produced in much larger numbers than the B even though production didn't begin until after the start of the war. Thanks to Henry Ford, the first real aircraft mass production line was established in Willow Run, MI and Bs were reaching all theaters of operations.

However, either the C wasn't open enough or the plastic too thick, but they didn't fit worth a hoot. I masked and painted the diamond on both sides of the tail, and made a decal for the H in the center, as well as the aircraft number. The rest of the detail isn't the best either. These are quite thin and I only used the very mild Microscale setting solution on them. However, it did have some very nice Scalemaster decals for Northwest Airlines. I have some '3D' cockpit and cabin windows on their way to me for this build, so hopefully they will lift the sense of realism of the final result. Lovely paint and decalling and really nice NMF! I test fitted the clear part for the nose, and it was pretty awful. It only took a few minutes with a medium grade sanding stick to remove the seams. When I got the part to fit fairly well, I tried to paint it using my usual method of masking and airbrushing. My issue is I want to use the window decals with as little carrier showing as possible but am planning on reproducing the leaf decals with some paint masks.
