Groundbreaking research is conducted at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in eight main areas. On the mechanical engineering side, the areas include robotics, mechanics and design, materials, and thermofluids. The industrial engineering areas include human factors, information engineering, operations research, and applied machine learning. The MASc degree program provides students with an opportunity to pursue research-intensive advanced studies in a particular field of interest. Applicants must also satisfy the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering's additional admission requirement stated below. At the beginning of each student's program, a professor in the department will be identified as the supervisor who will guide the student in the research program and selection of courses. For students with an adequate undergraduate background, the program will normally consist of 2. MASc students are required to participate in the non-credit seminar course JDEH during their first or second session of registration. Students in the MASc program have the option of completing an emphasis in Sustainable Energy as part of their degree program. The MEng degree program is designed for students preparing for advanced professional activity; it is not a research-oriented degree. This course is an introductory level turbulence class. This content is offered as part of MIE Turbulence. The goal is to learn fundamental concepts and apply them. The motivation behind this project was the thought that there is a benefit in allowing students time to digest complex information as delivered in an introductory turbulence course. This allows students the possibility of reviewing content on their own.

Data Analytics involves the algorithmic processing of data for purposes of description what happened , prediction what will happen , or prescription what should be done. Machine Learning focuses on the computational and statistical methods for learning patterns and associations and obtaining insights from data. Data Analytics and Machine Learning collectively represent the forefront of technology innovation powering a wide range of applications including personalized e-commerce, cybersecurity, intelligent logistics and scheduling, financial investing, digital marketing, adaptive user interfaces, and health applications including medical imaging analysis. Graduate students at the University of Toronto students registered in the MEng program offered in CHE, CIVMIN, ECE, MIE, MSE have access to nearly 50 graduate courses in different areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and their applications in different disciplines of engineering, developed and taught by our outstanding engineering faculty, many of whom have earned accolades for pioneering research and exceptional teaching. MEng Students [1] can earn [2] the Emphasis in Data Analytics and Machine Learning by successfully completing the single prerequisite course APS [3] , one core course, and three additional elective courses from the lists presented below.
