Metacritic yooka laylee

The game follows chameleon Yooka and bat Laylee on their quest to retrieve a magical book from an evil corporation. Yooka-Laylee received mixed reviews, with critics divided on whether emulating its predecessors was enough to make it a successful game, or whether it was purely trying to capitalize on nostalgia. While most critics agreed that it captured the essence of earlier platformers, they also pointed out technical shortcomings and outdated gameplay. A spin-off, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair , was released on October 8, , [3] and a sequel to the original game is currently in development. Yooka-Laylee is a platform game played from a third-person perspective. The player controls two characters that work together to explore their environment, collect items, solve puzzles and defeat enemies. Its colorful worlds, vibrant and funny characters, and generally smart and entertaining level design often had me grinning as I remembered my times with games like its not-so-thinly-veiled inspiration, Banjo-Kazooie. But while I enjoyed my 15 hours in the world created by developer Playtonic, I was bummed to notice camera issues, some bland activities, and small number of worlds that keep Yooka-Laylee from reaching the heights of its predecessors. Like the iconic 3D platformers of the bit era, Yooka-Laylee follows a very familiar and much-appreciated formula. You have your hub world, which acts as a sprawling maze that teaches you the basic mechanics before allowing you to really stretch your legs in a handful of huge, colorful stages. You explore the spaces, gather hundreds of different knick-knacks that can be used to purchase new abilities, discover new worlds, and unlock fun retro-arcade games that can be played locally with up to three other pals in a mode separate from the main campaign. Their relationship is both cute and functionally similar to that of Banjo and Kazooie: Yooka is a heroic lizard who does most of the heavy lifting, while Laylee is a sarcastic bat with abilities like a sonar ray that unlocks invisible objects, and a brief invincibility barrier that act as support. Standard platforming stuff like double jumps, flight, and a ground pound are joined by some surprising new additions that I really appreciated.

If the original Yooka-Laylee was a mostly solid homage to 3D action-platformers such as Banjo-Kazooie, then Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a finely crafted love letter to side-scrolling 2D platformers like Donkey Kong Country. The colorful worlds, challenging platforming segments, and creative level designs are engaging from start to finish as you jump, roll, and spin your way towards defeating the evil Capital B and rescuing the pun-riddled world of bee-kind. Experimenting with full 3D was fun, but The Impossible Lair shifts the perspective back to a more focused 2. The result is a spectacular and well-paced hour adventure starring Yooka the chameleon and Laylee the bat. Each level requires quick reflexes using its snappy and responsive controls, along with a willingness to face a hefty dose of old-fashioned retro challenge. The story, meanwhile, is entirely forgettable outside of its function as an excuse to keep feeding you bee puns. So, to make it survivable, you have to seek out the 48 collectable bees scattered around the other levels, each of which grants you one extra hit you can endure in the lair. That lets you effectively set your own level of difficulty, and really dares you to attempt that early perfect run. This sprawling, top-down 3D adventure-puzzle game connects all of the platforming levels together, and you can easily spend more time uncovering secrets and new passageways here than you do in the levels themselves. Visually, The Impossible Lair is bursting with personality.

The levels mostly all look the same, the alternate stages feel like padding, and the Impossible Lair gimmick is definitely going to be divisive for platforming fans.
