London is short on Mexican restaurants which deliver the real thing, rather than the dreadful Tex-Mex experience. We arrive on a Thursday night which unfortunately coincides with the Mestizo Taco Night in the space downstairs and the staff are rushed off their feet. Fortunately all comes right with the main courses. Even better is the Pato en Pipian Verde Both dishes are served with refried beans, rice and homemade tortillas which are perfect for dredging up the mole sauces.

Read about that experience here. So you can just imagine my excitement about visiting the restaurant to have a fully authentic Mexican menu. We sat down ready to devour the entire menu, totally unsure of what to order. Luckily staff were willing to help us by suggesting the most popular dishes. While waiting for our food we enjoyed some delicious margaritas. The Lily Margarita and Guavarita Margarita were absoliutely delicous and it really is no surprise that Mestizo know how to make margaritas. They have over tequilas in the resturant and over 40 different margaritas available to order. A selection of four Empanadas was our first starters. The cheese and potato ones were certainly our favourites. Our second starter was the Flautas — 4 rolled corn tortillas with chicken deep fried then topped with shredded lettuce, a tomatillo salsa, sour cream and scattered with queso fresco ranchero. They were divine. The combination of chicken and beef served in a volcanic stone bowl with cheese, chorizo, grilled spring onions, cilantro and avocado with a choice of salsa roja, tomatillo, mole or chipotle chili and 4 warmed corn or flour tortilas was just WOW. Given the serving size though we had to take left overs home as we would have rolled out of Mestizo for sure. We finished with the Pineapple Margarita and the Pomegranate Margarita to wash down our delicious dinner before our dessert came.

In fact, thanks to a plague of simply foul Tex-Mex chain restaurants operating across the capital, many city dwellers have been led to believe that Americanised soggy burritos, crispy taco shells and lactic guacamole are the pinnacle of Mexican cooking. Operating from a neglected thoroughfare between Euston station and Camden Town, Mestizo, however, has been serving authentic Mexican food to hungry Londoners since Like all of the best Mexican restaurants in the UK, inside the scarlet space is flamboyantly decorated and straddles the fine line between kitsch and tacky. Upon taking our seats, a waiter introduced a wooden block, half red and half green, resembling a discoloured anti-biotic, intended to be used for alert waiting staff. A tequila sour exemplified a classic cocktail that had been made simply, albeit well, while a contemporary habanero margarita delivered an aggressive punch of spice to work in surprising harmony with the tequila base. To start the Independence Day-themed dinner, a bowl of nacho chips had a stale texture similar to that of an open box of cornflakes that had been neglected for the past two years.
I love Mexican food, and yet this is the first time in years I've come away from a Mexican restaurant thinking "wow! The food here is excellent, tasting The restaurant looked great too, however it is not that big which caused a few issues: - Firstly, you should tell customers when they first sit down if you need the table back within 2 hours rather than waiting till the end and then repeatedly pestering them in the final 15 minutes. Standing around awkwardly with half a bottle of wine whilst you wait for space to be cleared was not great. We'd have stayed for a cocktail if it wasn't for that last annoyance, but regardless, this is a very good restaurant and I'd return for the quality of the food alone. Great food, if not a bit pricey, but authentic Mexican food is at a premium in London : Mateo was a friendly server and recommended some great mezcal. Tacos were tasty and were so much better than any of the counter service burrito places around
