Opened in the fall ofMell Classroom Building and the partial renovation of the adjoining Ralph Brown Draughon Library was envisioned as a transformative educational environment for Auburn University and its 20, undergraduate students, mell classroom building. Our design team worked closely with the University to make the learning experience in this facility not only effective, but unforgettable as well.

Engaged and Active Student Learning EASL relies on high levels of student engagement and activity to create a collaborative and energetic classroom environment between students and instructors. Auburn University's new classroom facility has been bustling with students and faculty during its first week, and the excitement about the new space likely won't be slowing anytime soon. Throughout the building's three stories—all designed with Engaged Active Student Learning in mind—students are studying in common areas, chatting with each other, tucked away in corners reading and, most of all, soaking in everything Mell has to offer. The atmosphere in here is way cool. Students enter the building from Mell Street and immediately find themselves in a three-story atrium that sits on what was once the plaza in front of the Ralph Brown Draughon Library. In order to offer students a place for engaged learning and then encourage those classroom dialogues to continue in study spaces, the facility needed to be as close as possible to the library. As it turns out, constructing the building onto the front of the library and merging the two spaces as one seemed to be the best solution. Long before the doors of Mell opened, informal study spaces were being added to the library.

While most college students are familiar with large lecture halls, classrooms in the new facility will be outfitted with technology that far exceeds laptops and projectors. Instead, students will take an interactive approach by using multiple TV monitors, cameras and digital screens to collaborate and engage with peers and professors. This is one of the steps in our strategic planning process to provide students with state-of-the art, actually leading-edge, classroom and learning environments. Auburn faculty members have been preparing for years for this new style of learning. Furniture in the EASL classrooms is mobile and designed to be moved in different configurations within a minute or less when all students pitch in to help. If a professor knows the lesson for the day is better suited for lecture-style instruction, they can switch to that mode of teaching, Boyd explained. The building committee also wanted to make sure that students were as close to the library as possible—a goal that was achieved by building the facility onto the front of the Ralph Brown Draughon Library. To make access to the library seamless, four new bridges were built to connect the new construction to the existing building.

Slated for completion in fall , the complex is a 69,square-foot structure adjacent to the existing Ralph Brown Draughon Library and includes renovations within the library. The building will serve students across academic majors and programs with classrooms designed to reinforce the concept that the long-term learning takes place when students are adequately prepared for and challenged by a task—engaged active student learning EASL. EASL classrooms allow students to step outside their regular learning space and apply knowledge in an interactive way.
