I concede it is possible that a man in depression might be able to heal himself by projecting his personality into a hand puppet. I am not sure it is possible, or even advisable, to make a serious movie about that. We go through the movie with Mel Gibson wearing a toothy beaver on his left hand, and that creates a whole lot of disbelief for us to suspend. I think that this film really sent out all kinds of totally screwy messages about dealing with matters concerning serious psychosis. I don't know if he's acting or is it him self in the movie, and honestly i don't care. IF I were going to make a movie about a depressed dude who talks through a puppet, I would cast Mel Gibson. It would've been great! As much as the movie is interesting, unique, creative, and playful, it is equally as annoying, bad, and simply confusing and dumb at parts. A series of incidents leads to him taking on a new persona in which he speaks through a beaver hand puppet. This is certainly not a film for everyone but if you like a movie that's choc full to the brim with the human element, excellent acting and directing then I really would recommend it. Nor did anyone in the house ever hear these thundering bouts of insanity Gibson may be no one's idea of a method actor, but his pleasure playing nut jobs seems weirdly confessional.
