Unlike her previous version, she is lesbian and struggles with following Almerac's traditions in continuing the royal line with finding a male mate. As a Leaguer, she helped in the fight against Doomsday , and when that version of the League disbanded, she became a member of Captain Atom 's Extreme Justice team. During the period of her flirtation with Captain Atom, a jilted Ultraa angrily attacked him.
Their power was noted for being vast and that they had few rivals. She explained that she was leading her people to safety from Imperiexthe force that conquered her world.
An Almeracian identified as Maxima joined Superman in his fight against Doomsday but was defeated and remained unconcious until they were rescued by Guardian who took her to a regional trauma center for medical treatment. Because Almerac's population was dwindling, she was expected to do her part to repopulate the planet by choosing a mate and bearing children. Maxima was disgusted by it, and became estranged from her family. Maxima was chosen as a student by Crucible Academy , an intergalactic school which exists to train potential heroes. There, she made friends with other students like Supergirl. During a mission, Maxima was tasked by one of her teachers, Lys Amata with the mission to bring Superboy back to Crucible.

Representing the apex of Almeracian eugenics, Maxima resolved to continue in the same tradition of her people. To that end, she became obsessed with expanding her galactic reach and, most importantly, securing a suitable mate to father an heir to her glorious realm. When Sazu , her personal handmaiden, intercepted a subspace transmission detailing the astonishing feats of Superman in the gladiatorial games of Mongul 's Warworld , Maxima was sure she had found her man. Without further delay, she set out to make the Man of Steel her husband. But despite Maxima's beauty and power, Superman consistently eluded her for various reasons. As a result, Maxima's admiration turned to rage, and she became his enemy. The character was conceived during the period of the late eighties and early nineties, when comic book specialty stores were dominated by X-Men related titles. Aside from the conspicuous visual similarities to Marvel's Jean Grey , Maxima's creators also borrowed elements from other popular X-book characters such as Magneto , Nightcrawler and Professor X.
